Saltwater Church is an intentionally inclusive, spiritually progressive,
justice seeking community of all ages, serving South King County since 1954.

Join us for Sunday worship at 10:30 a.m.

Theme Based Ministry
January:  What does it mean to be a people of INTEGRITY?

Throughout the month of January we are exploring the theme of integrity; the capacity to know ourselves in all of our wholeness and complexity, and to live with authenticity. Who loved you into being? What life lessons guide you? What are our most important values as people of faith? How do we embody those values more deeply? Do we have the courage to be honest with ourselves? Then, can we embrace what we discover? Soul Matters describes being a people of integrity as the practice of living from the inside out and refusing to hide. Come, join us to deepen our faith   together.

This Week's Announcements
Publicity for the week of Sunday January 12, 2020

Ways to access Pastoral Care
We all have times when we feel overwhelmed by events and changes in our lives. The pastoral care team has prepared a chart, available at the welcome desk or in the church office, to help you decide which of our caring roles fits your need. You can also access a copy of the chart electronically in the members section of the website, titled "Pastoral Care-Who do you call?"

Practical needs are often handled by the Caring Team, which has Denise Yanega as the Lead. The Lay Ministers are available to help with life challenges, primarily by being a listening presence. Our Lay Ministers are Debra Valpey, Mike Yanega, Lynn Crow, and Toska Rodriguez.  Rev. Kristen Kuriga provides pastoral care and spiritual counseling, especially in times of crisis. Contact phone numbers and emails are on the back of the chart.

Following Sunday services, a Lay Minister will be located in the front left corner of the Sanctuary to offer a listening presence. They are wearing a light blue shawl so you can identify them. During that time you can briefly discuss your concern with the lay minister or you can arrange for further follow up by a member of the lay ministry team.

The Book of Joys and Sorrows is also available in the front of the sanctuary each Sunday. In the book you can request follow-up from a Lay Minister by checking a box.

If you already have a copy of the "Who Do You Call" chart, we invite you to use it when you need support.
            -Rev. Kristen Kuriga

Lighthouse Renovations Update
I am excited to share that we have completed the renovations on the Lighthouse to welcome our new renter, Planting Flowers Learning Center.
The work included plumbing, electrical, fire alarm, and construction, as well as countless hours of volunteer work. Thank you to everyone who provided support. In December the Lighthouse was approved by State Fire and State Licensing, and on January 6 we received the final inspection from the City of Des Moines. Planting Flowers has moved into the space and we anticipate that the program will have children on-site in mid to late January.

If you go to the Lighthouse, you may notice some changes: rebuilt decks, handrails, and steps, a sink in the Lighthouse Activity Room, an added door in the youth room, and an upgraded fire alarm system and exit signage. The room setup also looks very different, which will be an adjustment. This is a time when we are learning to live into this new partnership. We know you might have questions, concerns, or wonderings. You are invited to an after-service conversation on Sunday, January 12, starting at 12 pm in the Sanctuary. Rev. Kristen, and Melinda. our Director of Family Ministries, will be there to offer an update and to answer questions. -Rev. Kristen Kuriga

Interested folks can grab a treat and a drink and head to the office building for fellowship fun. This is an informal session for visitors to meet a few members and learn more about our church. -Bev Ross, Membership Team

Sound Alliance's Train the Trainer Civic Academy prepares for public discourse on homelessness and aims to build broader acceptance for community-wide solutions for housing. The academy will address fears and myths that hold back important initiatives to solve housing needs of our neighbors in South King County. We welcome participants. January 16th 7 to 8:30pm To sign up or for more information: Lucia Faithfull [email protected], Diane Dobrowolski ddobrowolski @earthlink.net

Great Opportunity!
Do you wish you could do more to help with the Immigration Situation? Volunteers are needed to 'just accompany' detainees to their ICE and detention center appointments. In your role, you merely need to be present, provide solidarity and witness ONLY! You do not need to speak Spanish or another language. Consider joining the upcoming training sponsored by The South Sound Accompaniment Coalition, Jan 22 at 10:30 to 1:30 at the Tacoma Dominican Center at 7th and Fawcett St, Tacoma. Contact Diane Dobrowolski [[email protected]] for more information.

Holiday Cards for Prisoners
Do you have extra Christmas cards or stamps left over after sending out your cards this year? Please consider donating them so we can send holiday cards to incarcerated U.U.'s through Worthy Now Prison Ministry. My goal is to send 200 cards next year with the help of our congregation! Please contact Joanne at [email protected] to learn more about how you can help.

Childcare for Church Events
Saltwater Church provides childcare for all events held here. To request childcare for church events, please contact Director of Family Ministries Melinda Einander at childcare@ saltwaterchurch.org Please remember to request childcare in advance of your event (1 week in advance if possible). Childcare requests made the day of the event generally cannot be honored.

Meditation Every Tuesday evening between 7:00pm and 8:30pm you are welcome to meditate in our Sanctuary with our Saltwater Meditation Group.
Meditation with a group allows you to experience silence and stillness in community and is, in our experience, more powerful than meditating alone. We follow a UU modified Zen practice that includes lighting a candle, chiming a singing bowl, sitting and walking in silence together, listening to words of wisdom and sharing tea. No experience is needed. Contact Jean Spohn if you have questions. [email protected] or 206-200-7524
