Last semester, Maria, a member of our Community Connection team, had a child in one of her weekly support groups
who was witnessing violence at home and struggling with anger at school. Each time he came to group, he would consistently seek attention by fighting with other children.
In response, Maria gave him the opportunity to express himself each week, telling him that his feelings were OK but that actions like fighting would not solve his problems. Still, Maria could not tell if these messages were getting through to him. She worried each week that he would not return to group again.
However, on the last day of group and to Maria's surprise, the boy presented her with a bouquet of beautiful flowers, expressing his gratitude for the consistent support and encouragement she had shown him all semester. Maria was touched and shocked that he had done this for her; she could finally see the true impact she had made in his life.
