LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

The pandemic is still in full effect, and while 2020 has been more or less cancelled, it is at the moment difficult to know how 2021 will play out.

The ability to host Sports Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Congresses relevant for our community with physical presence and participation still seems far away. Therefore, IFSPT, in agreement with The Danish Sports Physical Therapy Association, have decided to postpone the World Congress to August 26-27, 2022.

As the Congress theme was "Translating science into action," creating a Congress with time for social interaction and physical activities was prioritized in the agenda, and an online Congress did not seem to be a very attractive option. Furthermore, as this is a World Congress, going ahead with attendance under restrictions was also considered. This could, however, mean that people from many parts of the world would not be able to attend, so this solution was also not considered ideal.

Therefore, hoping for a better situation in 2022 seemed like the most appropriate decision, and many colleagues have contacted us with support and praise of our decision. We do not wish to leave anyone hanging, or prompt potential participants and speakers to make difficult decisions during these unprecedented times.

More information will follow on how we will pursue the General Meeting, which in recent years has taken place the day prior to the Congress start; this increases the likelihood of Member Organizations to be physically present. Further info on how this will play out in 2021 will follow, but according to IFSPT articles, it is possible to hold the General meeting online, so this may be the solution of choice.

In relation to online activities IFSPT is proud together with La Trobe Sports and Exercise Medicine Centre (LASEM) to present the latest Sports PT relevant research across the globe in an online webinar form the 27-29th of October. This event is also a way of trying to improve the Sports PT profile globally by strengthening collaborations between Sports PT environments and national and international Sports PT organizations. This benefits all Sports PT clinicians globally, and is a conference model that we hopefully will see more of in the future. It makes so much sense to bring Sports PTs together in this way online. Furthermore, 2020 will also be the first year that an annual report of all IFSPT activities will be presented and transparently shared with our global community.

As the President I can't help being a little bit proud of how much activity IFSPT has been able to initiate and execute during these times - but also how much support and work some of our Member Organizations and other external partners have been willing to bless us with.

So read the newsletter and follow IFSPT to get a piece of the action during the rest of 2020 and beyond.

Kind regards,
Kristian Thorborg
President, IFSPT

World Physiotherapy Congress 2021 moves to online event
The World Physiotherapy board has considered the options for continuing to plan for a physical event in Dubai in April 2021.

While recognising the importance of bringing the global physiotherapy profession together, the board has reflected on a range of uncertainties around COVID-19 (for example, government travel guidance, social distancing, employer and travel restrictions) and the impact on the wider physiotherapy community.

After careful consideration, the board has decided to move to an online event for congress in 2021.

More details will follow as planning moves forward.

World PT Day 2020 is a resounding success

World PT Day was celebrated around the world on 8 September.

The toolkit is now available in over 50 languages and materials have been downloaded 21,000 times.

The materials were developed to mark World PT Day, with an emphasis on the role of physiotherapy in rehabilitation after COVID-19 and the delivery of physiotherapy via digital health solutions, including telehealth. But we encourage physiotherapists around the world to continue using the materials as they will remain current throughout the pandemic.

If you celebrated the day, please let your national association know and send a brief report and a selection of photographs to [email protected].

Immediate impact of COVID-19 on entry level education

World Physiotherapy has published the latest in a series of briefing papers exploring the impact of COVID-19.

The paper examines the effect of the pandemic on meeting pre-COVID-19 regulatory requirements, 2020 entry to the profession, international mobility, and immediate changes in practice and how they have informed entry level education from a regulation perspective.

UPCOMING CHANGES TO THE IJSPT

The American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy Executive Committee recently notified their membership of the difficult decision to suspend operations of the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy. As indicated at that time, the Executive Committee had been working for the past few years on how to balance long-term budget requirements with providing a high level of member benefits. The decision to suspend operations of IJSPT was multifactorial and included such factors as the long-term sustainability of providing three peer-reviewed journals as a member benefit and challenges to sustaining publications in light of predatory journals and open access publishing.

Following notification of the Executive Committee's decision to suspend operations of the Journal, Michael Voight, IJSPT Editor-in-Chief, communicated with the AASPT Executive Committee to state his interest in taking over publication of IJSPT. Upon execution of a Memorandum of Understanding between AASPT and the North American Sports Medicine Institute (NASMI), the parties were able to negotiate the details of transferring ownership of IJSPT.

AASPT and NASMI have now agreed to terms and have executed an agreement for the transfer of IJSPT to NASMI. Dr. Voight and the NASMI will assume publication of the Journal beginning in January 2021. As a result of this agreement, AASPT will no longer have any source, affiliation, sponsorship, or any other relationship with IJSPT moving forward. However, AASPT members will be offered the ability to continue to access future issues of IJSPT free of charge if they so desire, compliments of NASMI. An opt-in link will be provided on the IJSPT page on the AASPT website, as well as on the IJSPT website, www.ijspt.org.

To the benefit of IFSPT, the IJSPT board has decided to offer the Journal to IFSPT Members free of charge beginning January 1, 2021. More information on access will be shared in the IFSPT January newsletter.

UPCOMING CONGRESSES

In the context of COVID-19 and recent developments, the Belgian Federation of Sports Physiotherapy has decided to postpone the BFSP Congress 1st National Congress on Sports Physiotherapy to Saturday, 21 November 2020.

This decision was made based on the advice of the competent authorities and the measures that apply within the universities.

As the COVID-19 is quickly spreading around the world, our number one concern is the health and safety of delegates, speakers, exhibitors and staff.

Registrations will be transferred to the conference in November.

We are very grateful for the support of our exhibitors and participants so far and we hope to welcome you to Brussels on 21 November for the 1st National Congress on Sports Physiotherapy.

With kind regards,
The BFSP board
