Invitation to Diocesan Priests and Deacons

As has been announced, the walkabouts for the introduction of the candidates for bishop are scheduled throughout the diocese during the week from Jan. 21-25.

The Transition Committee and the host churches would like to invite the clergy of the diocese to have dinner with the candidates at the walkabout location. Dinner will start promptly at 4:30 p.m. each evening and will finish at 6 p.m. This meal is at no cost to you and will allow for informal time with the candidates. Please plan to join us when we're near your area!

Special Electing Convention - register by Friday, Jan. 18

The Special Convention for the election of the 8th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California will be Feb. 9, 2019 at 8:30 a.m. at Faith, Cameron Park, located at 2200 Country Club Drive. The event is free, but all must register to attend. Register here.

Office of the Bishop closed Monday, Jan. 21

The Office of the Bishop will be closed Monday, Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Jr. day. We will resume our normal office hours the following day.

Funds collected for the clergy in the Diocese of Cuba

During the 2018 Diocesan Convention, the Eucharist offering was taken for clergy in the Episcopal Diocese of Cuba. We are pleased to share that we received several donations after convention, and as of Jan. 8, 2019, the diocese has donated a total of $9,115 to this fund. Thank you to all who donated!

Candidate Julie Vice sets goal to visit all 68 parishes/missions in the diocese

Julie Vice has visited 53 (red) of the 68 parishes/missions in our diocese.

Church Divinity School of the Pacific student and candidate for ordination Julie Vice knows that seminary is a time to grow and learn new ways of being the Church. In order to step out of her familiar leadership roles, Vice set for herself the challenge of visiting all 68 of the churches in our diocese.

Vice got her inspiration because of her class schedule at CDSP, where she has been taking hybrid courses, meaning most of her time is spent doing her classes online, as opposed to spending three years on campus.

Due to this schedule, Vice said, "When you do the program and stay home, you're trying to grow while in your same water. That makes it really hard because you're trying to become something new but you're surrounded by who you used to be and what you used to do."

But when she met with the Commission on Ministry last year, Vice came up with idea of traveling the diocese, where she could "see what other churches in the diocese are doing."

Chalking the doors of homes, churches: an Epiphany tradition

The Rev. Daniel London, Rector of Christ Church, Eureka, chalking the church doors.

Several churches in our diocese, including Epiphany, Vacaville; Trinity, Folsom; and Christ Church, Eureka, took part in an Epiphany tradition of marking their church and home doors with chalk symbols: 20+C+M+B+19

In this tradition, a short liturgy and prayer is said so that all who pass through the doors are blessed. The numbers are for the current year and symbolize God's blessing through the entire year. The letters refer to the first names of the three kings: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, as well as Christus Mansionem Benedicat, meaning "Christ bless this house."

Chalking the door is a way to tangibly honor God, as is said in Deuteronomy 6:9: "These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. ...You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."

Epiphany marked the Rev. Dr. Ann Hallisey's 35th ordination anniversary

Bishop Barry Beisner and his wife, the Rev. Dr. Ann Hallisey spent Epiphany 2019 at Church of the Epihpany, Vacaville, both in celebration of Epiphany and Rev. Ann's 35th ordination anniversary.

Rallying for resources in Marysville - Monday, Jan. 21

St. John's, Marysville, will be hosting a rally on Martin Luther King Day in support of those in their community who lack resources to find housing. The recent Camp Fire in Paradise has added to the burden of the homeless in this region. The goal is to raise awareness of the need for economic justice in our communities, to acknowledge the dignity of our homeless neighbors, and to organize to create real change for people who are pushed to the margin of our society.

St John's is co-sponsoring this event with the Poor People's Campaign and the California Homeless Union. The rally will be Monday, Jan. 21 from 5-7 p.m. at the church, located at 800 D St.

Join Trinity Cathedral in counting Sacramento's homeless

Trinity Cathedral parishioners will be volunteering for Sacramento County's 2019 Point-In-Time homeless count. The homeless count is essential to help our county apply for the appropriate level of federal homelessness funds. It's well organized and you will feel good about doing it.

Volunteering does not require any prior experience but you must be 18 years of age or older; have a strong interest in helping people who are experiencing homelessness; be able to walk a couple of miles and attend a required training class to learn to safely conduct accurate counts with teams within carefully pre-mapped territories. Information about the count goes out within the homeless community so that our counters are welcomed by people who are homeless.

The counts will occur Jan. 30-31 in the evening, and locations are to be determined. Volunteers go out in groups to their assigned area. You can sign up here; please also email Shireen Miles to let her know know you are interested: [email protected].

On Saturday, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m., Alex Leach, Jane Snibbe, and Julie D. Vice will be ordained into the Sacred Order of Deacons at Trinity Cathedral, Sacramento, 2620 Capitol Ave.

Celebration of New Ministry - Thursday, Feb. 28

The Celebration of New Ministry for the Rev. Brad Helmuth, Rector at Holy Trinity, Nevada City , located at 201 Nevada St., will be Thursday, Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m.

Companions in Franciscan Spirituality: free 10-day programs

The Community of St. Francis in San Francisco is offering several free 10-day residential immersion programs in Franciscan Spirituality. This program is for adult women who wish to study Franciscan spirituality and live out of that spirituality by sharing in community life, worship and ministry in the church and wider community.
