Children's Trust Brings Together Local Prevention Partners in Support of Statewide Awareness and Advocacy Campaign
|
Raising awareness is a critical first step in preventing child abuse and neglect. Child Abuse Prevention Month, held every April, is the annual opportunity for us to join voices with our 125 local partners and show we are a powerful force for children and families in South Carolina.
By planting pinwheel gardens, supporting proclamations and hosting awareness events, prevention partners provide a very visible presence in local communities. They also ensure that comprehensive, community-based prevention efforts are at work in South Carolina.
Standing with its national partners, Children's Trust is using the PCA America theme of #GreatChildhoods to highlight the ways people can engage in everyday activities in their neighborhoods, schools, community centers, civic groups and churches to prevent child abuse and neglect. The campaign objective is to inspire and foster action among the public to get involved in child abuse prevention efforts in their communities.

Step Up to the Plate to Prevent Child Abuse
Join Us April 5 for Fundraiser at the Columbia Fireflies Game
|
On Friday, April 5. Children's Trust will host its
Strike Out Child Abuse
, a fundraiser with the Columbia Fireflies at their second game of the season.
First pitch is 7:05 p.m.with postgame fireworks to follow. Tickets are $50 each for seating on the Broad River Balcony and a buffet. Guests will also have the opportunity to bid on silent auction items that include vacation packages, artwork, sports memorabilia and jewelry.
All proceeds for this Child Abuse Prevention Month event will help build strong families and positive childhoods in communities across South Carolina.

Summit Speakers Energize Home Visitors

Children’s Trust hosted its two-day, biennial Home Visiting Summit in March at the USC Alumni Center that focused on providing a quality learning and networking opportunity for 250 home visiting and early childhood interventionists in South Carolina. The summit’s theme – “Expanding the Road to Stronger Families” – highlighted the importance of a cohesive early childhood system.
Keynote speaker Naomi Haines Griffith spoke directly to the passion and the purpose of the home visitors. She advised them to be themselves, to be willing to share, to be vulnerable, to believe in the work, and to have a positive expectation of what they can do in the broader picture of strengthening families.
“Nobody knows anything about families unless you do home visits, sit on the couch and really talk with them,” Griffith said. “You bring your heart and offer it to make things better, healthier and safer for families.”

Sarah Griggs Named Home Visitor of the Year
|

Sarah Griggs, a nurse-home visitor with McLeod Health Nurse-Family Partnership, was named the winner of the first Home Visitor of the Year award at the USC Alumni Center in front of her peers at the Home Visiting Summit.
Chosen by Children's Trust in coordination with the South Carolina Home Visiting Consortium, Griggs was cited for her passion in helping pregnant women and young mothers with the resources and skills to raise children who are physically, socially, and emotionally healthy and ready to learn. She works in rural Chesterfield and Marlboro counties.
“It’s hard to put into words,” Griggs said. “I look at all the home visitors in the room, and everybody has strong points on how they work with families. It’s very humbling. I was totally shocked.”

Kappa Delta Continues Giving Legacy
|
|
After a successful fall fundraising campaign by the Beta Zeta chapter of Kappa Delta sorority at the University of South Carolina, Children’s Trust leaders accepted a substantial gift to help fund prevention work in South Carolina.
The longtime relationship between the organizations paid off when the fundraising efforts, which included a letter-writing campaign, were announced during a March ceremony at the Gambrell Hall auditorium on the USC campus. Addison Burke, Kappa Delta vice president for community service, presented an oversized check for $50,524.73 to Children’s Trust CEO Sue Williams and Steven Moon, vice chair of the board of directors, during a meeting of the sorority, which has 387 members.
“It’s terrific to see young adults just starting out and finding their way in the world be in such a giving spot," Moon said. "It’s great to be here, look them in the eye, thank them, and let them know how much it means to us. It gives us a connection with them and in the community.”

Children's Trust Releases Annual Report
|
|
Children’s Trust recently released its annual report, “Helping Communities Build Strong Families,” for the 2018 fiscal year.
The report chronicles our work to prevent child abuse and neglect, which includes supporting and delivering prevention programs, building coalitions, providing resources, and leading prevention training. The booklet highlights our partnerships that deliver home visiting program models, the Strengthening Families Program, and Triple P (Positive Parenting Program).

Building Hope for Children Conference Scheduled

Children's Trust will host the Building Hope for Children Conference, formerly known as the Prevention Conference,
Thursday, Sept. 5 and Friday, Sept. 6
at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Greenville.
With a theme of "Resilient Families and Thriving Communities," the biennial event offers child- and family-serving professionals the opportunity to attend dynamic breakout sessions, hear powerful keynote addresses, and network with peers from across the state. Save these dates, and please join us for what promises to be an inspiring and educational conference. Registration is coming in April.
