St. John's Episcopal Church

Welcome to the E-Notes!

May 2, 2018

Many, many thanks.......
Thank you SO much for the wonderful luncheon last Sunday at the Ciao Osteria Restaurant! It was a great way to celebrate all that St. John's has accomplished as well as my being called as your Rector. I feel truly blessed to be a part of this amazing community of faith. Special thanks goes to Lori and Andrew Wade, and Elise Crawford who organized and planned this event and offered it as a gift to the parish. It was a wonderful day! Thanks to all!!
Carol

  • The Progressive Dinner
Don't forget that the Progressive Dinner is this Saturday, May 5, starting at 5:00 PM, for those who have already signed up. If you have signed up and have not received a letter from Penny Parker telling you where you will have dinner, please contact her at [email protected]
  • Thanks to the Saturday Clean Up Crew
Many thanks go to those who came out last Saturday to spread mulch, trim boxwoods, and spruce up our grounds, now that winter is finally over. It was a beautiful day and most of the projects were completed. Thanks to Monti Zimmerman for organizing the day, Andrew Wade who got the participation of the Men's Group, and Bob Barnes for his donation of the mulch. It was a team effort! Many thanks to all!
  • Attention Graduates
If you or someone in your family is graduating from high school, college, or graduate school in the next few months, please let Carol know so we can share your good news with the parish family in the ENotes. If you know what you will be doing in the fall, send that information as well.
  • Shrine Mont Camps Sunday is May 6
This Sunday, May 6, is designated by the diocese as "Shrine Mont Camps" Sunday. We will remember Shrine Mont in our prayers as the camps gets ready for their summer season. If you or someone in your family attended a Shrine Mont camp and you have a Shrine Mont tee shirt, feel free to wear it to church on Sunday.
  • Pentecost is May 20
Sunday, May 20 is Pentecost, which is 50 days after Easter when the disciples were empowered to spread the gospel to all nations. In the past, we have had people who speak different languages read the gospel at the same time, so there is a cacophony of voices. If you speak a foreign language and you would be willing to participate in the reading of the gospel, please let Carol know as soon as possible.
  • Education for Ministry Program
In June, the six members of Education for Ministry will complete the first year of the four year program - Walt Cooner, Bob Faithful, Patricia McPherson, Durinda Smith, Craig Staresinich, and Val Tucker. (Carol serves as the mentor) We will be starting the classes again in September and we would love to have some additional members. We meet once a week for 9 months and then have the summer off. There are reading assignments to be done each week. It is a wonderful program of bible study and theological reflection. You sign up for a year at a time. Interested? Feel free to talk with a current member of EfM or let Carol know if you would like to sit in on a class. Registration for the coming year will be held during the summer.
  • Vestry
As you know, we have a wonderful and very hard working Vestry! A lot has been accomplished under their leadership and there is more work that needs to be done. However, six of the nine current Vestry members will be rotating off at our Annual Parish Meeting in February after having served their three year terms. We will need to fill those seats (we can have up to 12 on the Vestry). If you might be interested in learning more about what the Vestry does, feel free to sit in on a meeting. We meet on the third Sunday of every month at 12:00 noon in the library. Or you can talk with a current Vestry member. Their names are on the back of the bulletin each week. We need YOUR help!
  • Got Netflix?
"Come Sunday" is a movie on Netflix about who can enter the kingdom of God. Is it just those who are baptized and "saved" or is salvation universal and open to everyone? The movie portrays an evangelical pastor's dilemma when he believes that God loves all of us. It's a good movie that makes you think. (Thanks to Craig Staresinich for the recommendation.)
  • Parish Notes
Gail and Jerry Weirich welcomed their sixth grandchild on April 25. Weston Owen was born to Matt and Jenna who live in Denver. Jerry and Gail will plan a trip to Denver to meet their newest grandchild sometime later this month. Congratulations!

Bob Faithful's son, Bobby, was married earlier this month in Richmond.

Condolences go to the Faithful family on the death of Bob's former father-in-law, Richard Pary, on April 30 in Louisiana.

The Sixth Sunday of Easter:

May 6, 2018

  9:30 AM

We should make a joyful noise not only in this season, but throughout the year as the presence of God surrounds our every day. ~ Kitty Taylor

The First Reading:
A cts 10:44-48
God reveals himself to those he chooses, not only to those who are properly vetted or have superior knowledge. No human can control or mete out God's Spirit and his power.

The Psalm:
  98

The Epistle:
1 John 5:1-6
The work of the Christian, the follower of Jesus, is to love God, and to show and practice this love by loving all people.

The Gospel:
John 15:9-17
The work of a Christian is to expend energy serving others out of love. The love and energy comes from God alone, and if it does not, the Christian's engine dies.

Good Shepherd
We know how carefully a good shepherd watches over his sheep, always alert to their needs. He feeds and waters them, guards and protects them, watches for any sign of danger or disease, loves and cherishes them. They come to know and trust him, and recognize his voice when he comes to them. They belong to him, and they live in the security of that care and protection.
