After a whirlwind of activity in the month of March, April sprung upon us quickly. Students are finishing their spring break, hopefully energized and ready for what we call the "home stretch" of the school year. There are still plenty of days left, but sometimes, the warmer weather gets students a little more apathetic towards school responsibilities. We appreciate our strong parent support in keeping students focused and maintaining their academic progress. We want students to understand the importance of doing well all the way through, to the very last day of school.

Spring also brings with it more testing. During the month of April, freshmen and sophomores will be taking the ACT Aspire exam. This is a state-required assessment that measures academic achievement in English, math, reading, science and writing. ACT Aspire is linked to the ACT College and Career Readiness Standards and provides data, indicating if a student is academically on track to meet college and career readiness scores when they take the ACT as a junior. Our Curriculum Director, Mrs. Netzer-Jensen, coordinates these exams and appreciates all that you do to make sure your child is here on their scheduled exam days - well fed, rested and ready to do their very best. Sophomores will be taking their exam the week of April 8, followed by freshmen the week of April 15.

In other news, drama students, along with many parents, are putting in long hours as they prepare for the spring play. As we have come to know, Central students put on productions that never disappoint and simply amaze the audience. For more information, check out the article in this newsletter and be sure to mark your calendar for this great event!

Speaking of events, I would like to remind you with a simple click, you have access to the same information our students hear in the daily announcements. We understand that high school students may not be that forthcoming with information, so to support greater communication, the Daily Announcement link (under Quick Links on our homepage) is a great place to keep you in the know!

In closing, I would like to confirm, after 31 years in education, I have determined it's time for me to seek new adventures. My request to retire at the end of this school year was accepted by the School Board. As excited as I am about embarking on new adventures, I also feel sad to be leaving this extraordinary place. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have served in such a vibrant and supportive community, where education is valued as a top priority by students, teachers and parents alike. Thank you for your support!
Reminder: Revised 2018-2019 Calendar

The 2018-2019 Calendar has been revised to meet Wisconsin School Calendar requirements. Here is a reminder of the changes:
  • April 10 is a full day (not an Early Release Day)
  • Friday, June 7, will be the End of Semester 2/Last Day of School
  • Graduation Activities - Breakfast and Graduation Practice have been moved to Friday, June 7. Seniors will be released after Graduation Practice. Graduation will still take place on Sunday, June 9.

Hotspot Checkout
Students at Central use their laptops for accessing curriculum materials, collaborating, and completing a variety of assignments and projects at school and from home. In an effort to address the homework gap for students without home internet access, mobile hotspots are available for students to checkout through the school's library. Inspired by the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Miss Holmes takes us into the world of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson by exploring the added obstacles faced by these two iconic characters if they were women.

Revision in 2019 Testing Calendar
Testing season is upon us. Mandated testing will start on April 9; Advanced Placement (AP) students will take AP Exams in May.

Important Information for Parents of
2019-2020 AP Students
All students who will be in Grades 10, 11, or 12 during the 2019-2020 school year and have registered for one or more AP courses are required to attend an important AP meeting on Wednesday, May 1, during Early Release. Students will meet with their AP teachers to receive syllabi, other course information, and summer assignments.

Students will also receive the Advanced Placement Commitment Form, which must be signed by the student and a parent or guardian. The form must be returned to either Mrs. Haluzak or Mrs. Netzer-Jensen by Friday, May 17. Please watch for this form and read it carefully with your student.

Most days, it really seems like forever ago that I was in your shoes. I was anticipating graduation from high school and then going off to college. I could not wait to start building my future.

Unlike with many black families at that time, I was not the first to graduate from high school in my family. This was highly unusual, since my parents came from Mississippi, a state that had many laws in place that intentionally limited the opportunities of black people. My mother, who grew up in Mississippi and was a sharecropper's daughter, owns that family privilege of being the first to graduate. My mother loved learning but unfortunately, being a bright black woman garnered you nothing during those days of discrimination and prejudice. For her, dreaming about going to college was about as likely as wanting to live on the moon. She continued to cook and clean for white people who had far less intellectually to offer the world, but you are born into the world that you are born into.

My mother was the vision caster for the family. She spent a good part of her life encouraging family members of the opportunities that they could have, if they got a good education. From early childhood on, I bought into her message. I read everything that I could. I saw education as a way to conquer prejudice and discrimination. I applied myself in school.

There is one story that I need to tell you about my parents, and it shows that even due to their own personal lack of opportunities, they lived out their dreams through me. A few months after graduating from high school, they loaded me up their car and took me off to college. I was going to the University of Wisconsin- LaCrosse. It was only about a three-hour ride, but it seemed to take forever. I could not wait to dump my stuff, say goodbye to my parents and get to the nightlife that college offered. In retrospect, I remember that my parents walked very slowly around the campus, taking in all of the sights. They were in no hurry. The campus held a kind of mesmerizing charm to them. Years later, I realized that I had been handed the privilege of living out some of their dreams. They realized that on the day they took me to college. I was a clueless 18-year-old. I wish that I had been smarter...more perceptive. The implications of that day would have had a more profound effect than they did at the time.

My parents would never get to go to college. The color of their skin, when and where they grew up limited that. I would go to college, graduate school and beyond. Some years later, my parent would fly out to the east coast and watch my younger brother Stan get his Master's Degree from Harvard University, another one of their significant accomplishments. Not bad for the daughter of a sharecropper and her chauffeur husband!

Most of you do not have prejudice and discrimination holding you back. What then is your excuse not to succeed? Why squander away the things that you have been blessed with and the opportunities that lie before you? Even though I have told you the story of
my story, use their short, inspirational story to motivate you to want to work harder, do better and maximize your talents.

If you do, the world will be a better place.
