CMS Approves ASIPP's QCDR for 2019 MIPS Reporting
Patient-reported outcomes make ASIPP's NIPM-QCDR uniquely valuable to pain physicians
ASIPP members and interventional pain physicians now have the opportunity to engage patients through patient-reported outcomes and optimize performance under the Merit-based Incentive Payment System through the ASIPP Registry and National Interventional Pain Management - Qualified Clinical Data Registry (NIPM-QCDR).
In addition to being approved as a QCDR by CMS for 2019 MIPS reporting, the registry is now based entirely on patient-reported outcomes, making it uniquely valuable to pain physicians. Using patient-sourced data eliminates the need for clinical data from the EMR for quality reporting, which eases the workflow burden on providers and also reduces the cost of participating in MIPS.
"By centering the registry around patient-reported outcomes, we can easily and efficiently track patient progress and optimize potential reimbursements," said Laxmaiah Manchikanti, M.D., Chair, ASIPP Board of Directors. "The NIPM-QCDR is a great resource for our specialty. It gives us an improved and affordable workflow for patient outcomes tracking and MIPS reporting."
The registry enables providers and their patients to confidentially and securely report real-world outcomes following procedures performed in an office, surgery center, or hospital. The data from these outcomes tracked in the registry will expand knowledge and understanding of interventional pain management and set the stage for healthier discussions regarding healthcare policy and reimbursement.
The ASIPP registry is available to all interventional pain physicians, not just those participating in clinical trials or MIPS. Pain physicians who participate in the NIPM-QCDR and who are eligible for MIPS will have the opportunity to maximize their MIPS performance in 2019 and, thus, optimize reimbursement payments in 2021. ASIPP supports the Quality, Improvement Activities, and Promoting Interoperability categories of MIPS. To learn more and get started, visit

2019 Changes for Your Pain Practice- Are You Prepared
February 6, 2019
A constant for all practices is billing for evaluation and management services. It has been 20 years since any changes have been made to documentation requirements and the methodologies to determine the correct level of service to report. Sweeping changes have been proposed, to be implemented starting in 2019 and continuing through 2021.
Tune in to this webinar to learn how these reforms may impact work volume, documentation efficiency as well as revenue for your pain practice.
As communication technology advances, medicine is evolving to embrace these new ways to provide care to their patients. With the 2019 advent of CMS’s inclusion of telehealth services in their fee schedule, pain providers need to understand the rules, required documentation and coding for these virtual visits. After listening to this webinar, attendees will be able to answer questions such as: Who can perform these visits? What happens if the encounter results in a face-to-face visit? What needs to be recorded in the patient’s medical record?
Spinal cord stimulators have provided pain relief to many of those suffering from chronic pain. Whether your practice performs the implantation and ongoing care, or only provides the analysis and programming of these devices, be aware that some important clarifications have been made that directly impact billing and reimbursement. Spinal cord stimulation is also the subject of potential revaluing when performed at an ASC so ensure you understand how place of service may influence payment.
It is all over the news, we are in an “Opioid Crisis”. How is your practice balancing prescribing high risk medications, performing the necessary testing for potential misuse/abuse of drugs, but also surviving a payer’s audit? Some pain practices have already been targeted for investigation for overuse of urine drug testing, prosecuted by the government, and forced to pay large sums of money back to Medicare (and some other payers). Some have even had to serve time in jail. Protect your providers and your practice from falling prey to these situations by learning what needs to be documented to support medical necessity for your opioid related services.
You will be provided with the tools you need to handle these and other 2019 updates so mark your calendars now: February 6, 2019 and join us for this informative session.

U.S. substance abuse helpline largely unknown
he U.S. government’s toll-free substance abuse helpline, which provides free referral services to those looking for treatment, gets little publicity, a new study finds.
By contrast, suicide helplines are regularly publicized, the research team points out.
When the researchers compared how often the addiction helpline was mentioned in news stories and social media after Demi Lovato’s overdose to how often the suicide helpline was noted after Anthony Bourdain killed himself, they found a huge disparity.
They hope their study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, will help change that.

Judge rejects DOJ motion to delay response in CVS/Aetna case due to government shutdown
Federal Judge Richard Leon isn't buying the partial government shutdown as a reason for the Department of Justice not to submit comments in the CVS Health and
Aetna
merger case.
Leon, on Friday, ordered the DOJ attorneys to "roll up their sleeves" and respond by February 15. The DOJ is required to respond to public comments on the CVS and Aetna consent agreement.
The DOJ also filed a motion last week to stay the appeals proceedings in case of a Texas judge who ruled the
Affordable Care Act
unconstitutional.
