From now until March 4, the Boston Printmakers' "2017 North American Print Biennial" is on view at the Lunder Arts Center at Lesley University College of Art and Design. Juror Judith Brodie, Curator of Modern Prints and Drawings at the National Gallery of Art, explains what she sees as the connecting theme of this biennial's work: "The touchscreen culture is leaving many artists hungering for labor-intensive, hands-on experiences." Each piece in the show is meticulously crafted, showing not only the skill of each artist but their passion for their trade. The Boston Printmakers is also celebrating the 70th anniversary of its founding in 1947 during this biennial. What started as a small group of college students and faculty has since become an esteemed group of international artists, and the 2017 North American Print Biennial is a testament to how far the Boston Printmakers has come. The James Library and Center for the Arts will be showing "We the People" until March 14. This exhibition curated by William Houser, features twelve accomplished artists exploring the tumultuous political environment of the modern era and examining their own responses to it. The group exhibit includes work by David Lee Black, Stephanie Roberts-Camello, Aldous Collins, Virginia Fitzgerald, Ray Genereaux, Larry Guilmette, Laura Harvey, the late David Lang, Kimberley Majury Albanese, Stephen Sheffied, Alison Silva and Christina Zwart. Any viewer is sure to find work that speaks to them among the pieces in "We the People." Worcester Art Museum is showing "Dangerous Liaisons Revisited" until April 22. The exhibition is centered around the museum's Ming period handscroll painting titled "Ming Huang and Yang Guifei Listening to Music." The Tang Dynasty emperor, Ming Huang, ruled from 712 - 756 and his fateful love affair and marriage with the young consort, Yang Guifie became an enduring tale of love and tragedy. Throughout centuries this tale has captivated poets, writers, and artists in both China and Japan. "Dangerous Liaisons Revisited" examines the story's longevity and timeless appeal through works ranging from the 7th to the 21st century; each offering a different interpretation of the event and exploring the Tang dynasty itself, an era marked by imperial decadence and sensuality. On March 15 and 16 there are museum program events planned in conjunction with the exhibition and the College of the Holy Cross. A cello concert with College of the Holy Cross visiting musician-in-residence, Jan Muller-Szeraws titled "A Reinterpretation of Ancient Music at the Chinese Tang Court" will be taking place on March 15 at 6:00pm. On March 16 there will be a one-day conference, "Between the Sacred and the Profane: Love and Desire in Premodern China," open to the public and held at the Rehm Library at the College of the Holy Cross with an exhibition viewing to follow at the Worcester Art Museum.
