The Torch chapter of Mortar Board honored Associate Professor Jerry Crawford (left) as a 2018 Outstanding Educator at halftime of the men's basketball game on Dec. 4. Mortar Board is a national college senior honors society that values scholarship, leadership and service. Since 1974, Mortar Board members have nominated and selected five winning educators each year who are devoted to academia, teaching style, accessibility, and knowledge of their subject as well as their positive influence on students both academically and personally.

Associate Professor David Guth participated in a panel discussion, "New Media: Transformation of Organizational Communication," on Dec. 3. The panel discussion was a class project within the Department of Communication Studies.
J-School colleagues said goodbye to

Research and presentations
|
On Dec. 7 at the 2018 Heartland Conference on Health Equity & Patient Centered Care, Associate Professor Mugur Geana chaired a workshop on community-academia collaboration to recruit participants to cancer clinical trials. The workshop targets health-care providers, community organizations and patient advocates and counts toward Continuous Medical Education credits. Assistant Professor Joseph Erba was one of the panelists at the workshop. On Dec. 6, Dr. Erba and Dr. Geana presented their research titled, "Information sources, awareness and perceptions of clinical trials among inner-city, low-income Black and White current cancer patients."
Associate Professor Yvonnes Chen's co-authored work has been accepted for publication in Frontiers in Nutrition, section Eating Behavior. This study evaluated a mobile nutrition literacy website targeted to English and Spanish-speaking parents and children ages 0-5 on parents' perceptions of healthy eating.

Student news and opportunities
|
Integrated Marketing Communications master's students in Professor of the Practice Angie Hendershot's Market Research class presented their findings to Negro Leagues Baseball Museum President Bob Kendrick on the Field of Legends in Kansas City. Students spent the semester analyzing secondary research and industry trends and completing qualitative and quantitative primary research. A group of students will now turn that research into strategic marketing plans for the organization over a pilot winter intersession capstone course.

KU's University Awards committee is now accepting nominations and applications for the 2019 University Awards, which are among the most prestigious awards presented at KU. These awards were established to recognize students who embody service excellence, dedication, or whose academic achievements remain stellar.

Food resource
A recent survey indicated that 30 percent of KU students reported experiencing food insecurity. That's nearly one in three. In addition, the end of the semester brings stress for many students. If you are one of those students, faculty and staff are here to help. The J-School has created a food bank in Room 111A inside the Clarkson Gallery for students who need a little help. Students who need assistance can drop in and take what they need. Students also have other options available on campus and in Lawrence -- visit cco.ku.edu for a full list of food resources. For those students who might be feeling stressed or overwhelmed, please take advantage of mental health resources available to KU students. Visit the KU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) website for information, to make an appointment with a counselor, or visit the CAPS self-help library. Do not hesitate to reach out to any trusted faculty member in the J-School for help any time or email jschool@ku.edu.

Scholarships and contests
|
Applications are now being accepted for the Kansas Association of Broadcasters student awards. Deadline to enter is Feb. 15, and awards will be presented at the annual Student Seminar on April 2 on the KU campus. Learn more and enter here.
Applications are now being accepted for the Radio Television Digital News Association's 2019 scholarships and fellowships. Applications will be accepted through Jan. 18. RTDNF offers eight scholarships for journalism students and four fellowships for professional broadcast or digital journalists with fewer than 10 years of experience. Learn more here.
The Great Plains Journalism Awards contest is now accepting applications. The contest is an opportunity for students in an eight-state region to be recognized for their work. Students also can win $1,500 scholarships in five categories. Deadline to apply is Jan. 31.

Fellowship opportunities for minorities
Journalism in the Era of Disinformation Fellowship
Cultural Vistas, a nonprofit organization that provides international exchange opportunities to students and young professionals, invites students to apply to the Journalism in the Era of Disinformation Fellowship (JED), a funded fellowship program that gives student journalists from the United States and Germany the opportunity to meet their peers and learn about the role that disinformation plays in political coverage in both countries. Each year, up to eight German and eight American journalism students are selected to participate in this weeklong program in Washington, D.C., and New York, which will focus on political coverage in the United States and Germany and analyze the trend of "fake news."

Fellowship program in Germany
Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics is now accepting applications for its 2019 journalism program. FASPE is a free, two-week fellowship program in professional ethics and ethical leadership that begins by examining the actions and choices of German and international journalists in covering and enabling Nazi policies. Deadline to apply is Dec. 28.

Steve Booher, director of news and content at the St. Joseph News-Press, and
Jerry Howard, news director at News-Press NOW, visited the J-School last week to interview students for internships and jobs. The News-Press & Gazette Company owns many TV stations around the country and several newspapers in Missouri and Kansas.

Bob Kealing, 1987 J-School graduate, has won an Emmy Award in the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Suncoast Chapter contest in the Historical/Cultural category. Read the news story.
Matt Tait, 2001 J-School graduate, has been named sports editor of the Lawrence Journal-World, where he will cover University of Kansas basketball.
Jonathan Cooper, 2013 J-School graduate, has accepted a job as weekend anchor/reporter for KOTV-TV in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
