  • Colombian cluster of fragile X may reveal insights into 'premutation'
  • Nidia Quintero's cheeks and outstretched hands quiver incessantly. For the past few years, her husband has poured her morning coffee to keep her from spilling it. Her medical history is dotted with other serious symptoms. As a child, she had frequent seizures and headaches. At age 35, she had her uterus removed after several miscarriages.

Quintero, now in her mid-50s, is a member of a large extended family that comprises the world's largest cluster of people with mutations that cause fragile X syndrome. This rare genetic condition is often accompanied by intellectual disability, seizures and autism1. Read on...

  • Sex differences in brain hint at roots of 'camouflaging' in autism
  • Autistic women's activity in a 'social' brain region tracks with the extent to which they mask their autism, according to a new study1.

Their activity in this and another social brain region when they reflect on themselves or others resembles that of their typical peers. Men with autism, by contrast, show less activity in these regions than typical men do.

The new findings reinforce the idea that autism manifests differently in women than it does in men.

"Maybe the idea of a hypoactivated social brain doesn't apply universally to everyone on the spectrum," says co-lead investigator Meng-Chuan Lai, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Toronto in Canada. Read on...

  • Unusual sensory responses in infancy may hint at autism
  • Some children diagnosed with autism by age 2 show unusual responses to sights, sounds and textures as infants, according to a new study1.

For example, the infants may cover their ears in response to ordinary conversation or shrink from being touched; they may also be slow to react to pain or changes in their environment. Their unusual reactions become more pronounced over the second year of life and tend to co-occur with repetitive behaviors.

"Babies who develop autism have these differences from late infancy onward," says lead investigator Jason Wolff, assistant professor of educational psychiatry at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Read on...

  • The 'Kit' We Created to Help Children With Autism Cultivate Friendships
  • When it comes to parenting a child on the autism spectrum, I always wished that there was a book with all the answers - a roadmap to help my son grow and thrive. But each child with autism is unique, so there are no "one size fits all" solutions to make sure I am meeting his needs.

I may not know what to do at any given time, but I must trust I have the strength within me to figure it out and, sometimes, fight for his services and support team.

And if the right "thing" doesn't exist? I must find the courage to create the solutions myself because if I don't do it, who will? I must step way beyond my comfort zone and take action. Read on...

  • No Wait for RDI at Family Guidance
  • Relationship Development Intervention (RDI®)

Our primary approach for treatment of autism spectrum is a developmental program called Relationship Development Intervention (RDI®). RDI® is a unique treatment approach that empowers parents to guide their child to succeed in our dynamic world. Children who learn to actively engage with the support of their parents in safe but challenging learning opportunities develop a strong motivation to explore and expand their world, as well as develop competence and trust in themselves and their guides.

    Why RDI®?
Foundations of the adult mind are developed in the first years of life through the "Guiding Relationship". From the middle of the first year of life, hour-by-hour, day-by-day, in every culture on earth, children interact with parents and other important adults in deceptively simple encounters, with a very serious underlying agenda; constructing the architecture of the child's mind and brain. • Participate in Research: Caregiver/Family Member Survey
  • business_finance_research.jpg

My name is Richie Sapp. My twin brother, Mikey, has been attending the TERI day program for several years now. I am a third-year medical student (MS3) at Stanford School of Medicine where I am currently taking a research year to focus my efforts in medical education, specifically to improve patient care for individuals with disabilities. I am creating an elective course for medical students/PA students for Winter Quarter 2018/19 and I could use your help.

Please consider completing this first survey and if your son/daughter would like to complete the second survey on their own, I would welcome that too.

    1) This survey is for parents/caregivers of individuals with disabilities. Caregiver/Family Member Survey, which will help me with what content to put together for the course. Please feel free to share the survey with anyone who might be interested in sharing their experiences. Here is the link: https://goo.gl/forms/FC0pVxymGi92OBq73

    2) Additionally, if you know anyone with a disability who would like to speak about their own experiences, there is a separate survey for individuals with disabilities. The link is below:

Thank you so much for all your support!
