American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation News
MARCH 2019
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE presidentmessage
Dear Colleagues:

Chris Zink It is a delight to be able to begin this month's president's message with good news. The results of the 2019 board certification examination are in, and we have 9 new members of the College. They are:

Equine Candidates
  • Mariana Castro Martins
  • Kylie Huxford
  • Sherry Johnson
  • Fernando Marques
  • Sybille Molle
  • Jessica Morgan
  • Tena Ursini
Canine Candidates
  • Tisha Harper
  • Serge Sawaya
Please join me in welcoming the new ACVSMR diplomates to the College.

This month, I'd like you to meet the Credentialing and Residency Committee. Ably co-chaired by Elizabeth Davidson and Rob Gillette, committee members include Janice Huntingford, Santiago Gutierrez-Nibeyro, Pilar Lafuente, Erin Contino, Judith Koenig, Dana Whitlock, Fran James, Michael Bell and Brittany Carr Benson.

This committee's tasks include establishing appropriate residency training requirements, preparing and disseminating information concerning the residency training for each certification practice category, monitoring candidate progress during residency training, and certifying candidate completion of their residency training prior to board certification examination. Essentially, the work of this committee has made it possible for each one of you to become an ACVSMR Diplomate.

The Credentialing and Residency Committee has had an especially onerous workload in the past year because there are 9 different sets of residency guidelines currently in existence. The changes in residency requirements were not of our choosing, but were imposed on the College over a number of years by the American Board of Veterinary Specialties. We are hard at work behind the scenes developing an online membership management system that will provide detailed information on residency requirements and will allow residents to report and track their activities online.

Despite these challenges, here are just a few of the recent accomplishments of this hard-working committee:

Credentialing Committee
  • Completion of Guidelines for Maintenance of Board Certification
  • Review of candidates for board eligibility
  • Response to numerous email inquiries regarding credentials (board eligibility, timelines, etc.)
Residency Committee
  • Revision of residency guidelines to improve readability and interpretation
  • Major revision of Resident's MasterLog template
  • Completed an Approved Journal List for resident publications
  • Annual review of resident training programs, a massive task with ~90 residents to review, about 50% of which required re-review after correction of major or minor issues
  • Review of program supervisors and their associated residents
  • Review and approval/disapproval of alternative residency applicants
  • Review of residency training changes (change of program director, change of primary practice/institution site of program, etc.)
  • Response to emails from current and prospective residents and residency program supervisors
A big thank-you to the Credentialing and Residency Committee! That is a lot of work for a small, dedicated team.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you have. I wish you all success and satisfaction in the coming month.

All my best,
Chris Zink_s signature

ACVSMR Represented at the National SAVMA Symposium in March at UGAsavma

SAVMA Symposium logo The Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) Symposium is an annual gathering of veterinary students from across the country to enjoy an opportunity for fellowship, education and fun. Together with the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians (AARV), the ACVSMR co-sponsored a lecture by ACVSMR diplomate Evelyn Orenbuch on Saturday, March 9, entitled "Your Options for a Career in Canine Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation."

In addition, the ACVSMR and AARV had a booth in the exhibit hall where students could ask questions, and obtain information about starting a VSMR club at their university, careers in VSMR and the path to becoming an ACVSMR diplomate. The goal is to reach students early and encourage interest in the field. Evelyn Orenbuch and Laurie McCauley represented ACVSMR at the booth.

Available Residency Positions residencies

ACVSMR is pleased to share news of available residency positions. Please see our Available Positions section below for additional information about internships and jobs.

Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation ACVSMR Residency, Veterinary Orthopedic and Sports Medicine (VOSM) Group, Annapolis Junction, Maryland - VOSM invites applicants for an ACVSMR Resident under the guidance of our ACVSMR diplomates with the support of our board-certified veterinary surgeons. This program is directed toward applicants who have successfully completed a small animal rotating internship. While the residency program places a strong emphasis on didactic training (rounds, journal club, book club, rehabilitation rounds), it also provides ample support for clinical research and publication. Part of our requirements for the residency program includes writing and publishing two peer reviewed articles on a self-chosen topic. The ACVSMR Residency program at VOSM also has strong support for out-rotations at local universities and a local human sports medicine and regenerative medicine center to fulfill the 20 weeks of immersion required in diagnostic imaging, surgery, internal medicine, neurology, and pain management. If you are interested in applying, please visit the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program (VIRMP) site, https://www.virmp.org/Program/Detail/11240. For more information and questions, please contact Alyse Carter, acarter@vosm.com.

Help Build a Resource Library for Veterinary Students! library

The public relations committee of ACVSMR is hoping to develop sports medicine and rehabilitation student clubs in veterinary schools. We are conducting a survey of all U.S. veterinary schools and are planning to establish contact with advisors of existing clubs. In addition, we will be reaching out to faculty at the remaining schools offering assistance in developing student clubs.

For our organization to be most beneficial to these student clubs, we are now requesting that ACVSMR diplomates help us to create a library of resource materials. These can include case reports (canine and equine), webinars, and videotapes of clinical conditions with diagnosis, etc. We will make these resources available to student club advisors for use in club meetings, crediting those who have supplied the resources.

We expect interest to be high and are hoping that you will support us in this effort by helping to build our library. Please contact Dr. Linda Blythe, linda.blythe@oregonstate.edu. Thank you!
