University of Miami Health System Welcomes Internationally Renowned Cardiac Surgeon, Joseph Lamelas, MD  
Joseph Lamelas, MD, an internationally recognized expert cardiac surgeon who helped pioneer minimally invasive approaches to cardiac surgery, has joined the University of Miami Health System as Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Professor of Surgery within the Miller School of Medicine. Lamelas will begin his new role in January 2019. Lamelas has performed more than 16,000 cardiac surgeries throughout his 28-year career; 7,000 of which have employed a minimally invasive approach.

"Dr. Lamelas is internationally recognized for his outstanding skills, outcomes, and innovation in cardiac surgery. His arrival at the University of Miami strengthens our luminary program in cardiovascular disease," said Edward Abraham, MD, Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and CEO of the University of Miami Health System. "Having Dr. Lamelas as our chief of cardiothoracic surgery solidifies UHealth as the preeminent center for cardiovascular disease in South Florida, and one of the truly elite institutions in the country."

South Florida Healthcare Executive Forum Introduces (SFHEF) 2019 Board of Directors 
The SFHEF has just announced its 2019 Board of Directors. Based in Dania Beach, the South Florida Healthcare Executive Forum serves healthcare professionals in Monroe, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties plus the Treasure Coast. The SFHEF is the local chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and currently boasts over 950 members. The 2019 Board will be officially installed on January 23rd at the organization's annual gala at the Signature Grand Davie. The dinner event will also feature Jerry Fedele, President and CEO of Boca Raton Regional Hospital and this year's Community Service Award Honoree. West Palm VA Welcomes New Associate Director
The Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced the appointment of Cynthia O'Connell as the new associate director of the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center. O'Connell began her role in December 2018 and is responsible for the oversight of hospital operational services to include fiscal, facilities management, medical administration, nutrition and food, police, and pharmacy services. O'Connell is a retired Brigadier General who is joining the Medical Center after serving more than 35 years in the United States Army. Throughout her military career she oversaw healthcare operations for various military treatment facilities, combat support hospital units and field hospitals. She has been stationed at various military bases to include Fort Ord, CA; Letterman Army Medical Center at the Presidio of San Francisco, CA; Wurzburg, Germany; Heidelberg Germany; San Pablo, CA; and Fort Hood, TX. Her most recent role was as the Deputy Commanding General for the 3rd Medical Command at Fort Gillen, Georgia.
