A Note from Pastor Chelsea

While driving around town together the other day, my sister-in-law Brandi was surfing through various radio stations. She paused as we heard Prince's voice sing out:

"Yeah hey, they say two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time
So tonight I'm gonna party like it's nineteen ninety-nine ..."

Remember that ear worm?

I had to laugh as I realized that song was released 20 years ago. Remember that Y2K panic? Everyone was told to prepare for the worst because the computers were going to rebel! We needed to buy all the canned goods!

To be fair, I was 11 years old, so my perception of what was actually being communicated was slightly warped.

Still, I remember the collective buildup of anxiety that seemed to permeate the news and how quickly people seemed to buy into the notion that things would soon be out of control. Most of us look back now and have a bit of a laugh when we realize what a great big nothing the Y2K panic turned out to be. Talk about an oversized, disproportionate, and, frankly, silly bit of ruckus!

Do you ever wonder if God looks at our reactions in life and thinks the same? Don't get me wrong - I wholeheartedly believe that God deeply cares about and empathizes with us even in our most emotional and anxious state. But I wonder if there aren't times where he just smiles and thinks, "If only you would trust me."

We're very good and saying we trust God. We aren't so great at executing it. We get so caught up in our own spiral of "What if ... ?" that we lose sight of the God who has shown us time and again just how faithful and trustworthy he is. We neglect scriptures that tell us of God's sovereignty ( 1 Chronicles 29:11-12), God's goodness ( Psalm 34:8), God's authority ( Isaiah 55:8-11), and God's steadfastness ( Psalm 86:15), choosing instead to transcend into a web of worry.

This past Sunday, I shared with you that if we follow Jesus, we know that evil days will come. It isn't a matter of if, but when. However, God has given us complete armor for the battles ahead! ( Ephesians 6:10-18) It's our job to reach out and take it from the Armor Bearer and put it on.

When we prepare our hearts for the struggles ahead by putting on God's armor proactively and not reactively, we resist the temptation to take the smallest of obstacles and turn them into Y2K-sized debacles.

Why not take some time in the days ahead to reflect on God's character - to remind yourself that he truly is in control? Release your anxieties to God - he can handle them.

Trusting with you,
Pastor Chelsea

BE PREPARED FOR SUNDAY

People of Extravagant Love
John 13:34-35

As Christians, we love God and love people by giving our lives for others because Jesus gave His life for us. But that love and sacrifice is not just for the preferred future when everything is as it should be. It means loving now because we know God is working right now! In other words, love is a verb ... it's something we do!
