Child sexual abuse is likely the most prevalent health problem children face, with the most serious array of consequences.
In fact,
1 in 10 children will experience sexual abuse before their 18th birthday.
This means that whether you work with youth, are a parent, or are simply a member of a community, it is highly likely that someone you know or care for has experienced, or is currently experiencing, child sexual abuse. It's going to happen whether you are prepared to deal with it or not - unless you stop it from happening. And the good news, it can be stopped.
Family Connection will TRAIN you to STAND UP for Dawson's Children!
Call us at 706-2165-1981 for more information.

October is MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH!

When we come down with a cold, most of us don't hesitate to seek help or visit the doctor. But if we can't seem to shake our endless worries or that nagging sense of hopelessness, we plug along as though nothing is wrong. Hence the dire state of mental health in the United States, where roughly one in four adults suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder, yet less than half receive treatment.
Take time to take care of you! Whether it is a relaxing bubble bath or a call to a professional...you are worth it! A partial list of professional resources in or around Dawson County can be found  HERE.

OCTOBER 23rd-31st IS RED RIBBON WEEK
This campaign occurs one time in a year, where schools and community members support the idea of being drug free. Parents, teachers and students come together to bring awareness to the community and take a pledge to be drug free. During the month of October, you may notice sandwich boards with messages pertaining to Red Ribbon Month at your child's school! Remember it is NEVER too early to start the conversation  about drugs and alcohol with your children.
For more information on getting the drug and alcohol conversation started,
please visit www.capa-ga.org.

"Be The Key's" goal is to implement strategies that have a proven record in reducing underage drinking in response to the perceptions and behaviors of the citizens of Dawson County. In October 2011, the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities selected Dawson County Family Connection to take part in the implementation of its statewide Alcohol Prevention Project (APP). Through a five-step Strategic Prevention Framework process, the following three strategies were chosen specifically for our community with implementation beginning in 2013.
  • TOO GOOD FOR DRUGS: Prevention curriculum administered by health teachers at Dawson County Middle and Dawson County Junior High School.
  • POSITIVE SOCIAL NORMS: Campaign aiming to influence behavior by altering the perception of underage drinking.
  • SOCIAL HOST LIABILITY: Campaign to educate adults on legal liability for allowing underage drinking on their property, and to decrease youth's access to alcohol.
The "Be the Key" campaign, encompassing all three strategies was created to target parents through education and increased awareness to remind them of the key role they play in underage drinking prevention.
Nancy Bruce, "Be the Key" Project Coordinator presented an end of the year report to the Family Connection Board and the Family Connection Collaborative on the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Project; reviewing actions taken during FY18. These actions include media created/dispersed and curriculum implemented in the school system. Between the Georgia Student Health Survey '18 and the Youth PSN Survey '18, it appears Dawson County is improving its perception of and understanding of underage drinking and tobacco use.
