Happy New Year! It was a pleasure to welcome back all the students. I'm sure everyone appreciated the Christmas vacation to rest and recharge their batteries; I know I did!  It was equally nice to have a three day week for our first week back to school.  It made for a nice transition into a month that starts slowly and ends with a bang as we celebrate Catholic Schools Week. (More about that later.)

Today we celebrated the feast of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton with a school Mass. Fr. John had a great message for the students.  He reminded everyone that just like we have many friends around us, the saints in heaven are also our friends. He demonstrated how to make a friends telephone with his two hands and said to never forget that "we have friends in high places that we can pray to!" Thank you Fr. John for being with us.

Beginning on Monday, you are going to see some changes in our a.m. drop-off routine. We are going to "clean up our act."  Please review the a.m. drop-off procedures farther down in this newsletter so that you will be prepared to abide by the correct routine. The safety of all of our students relies on your cooperation.

I hope the year 2019 brings good health and abundant happiness to all of our students and their families!  Enjoy a nice weekend.

Peace and God's blessings,

Ms. Ann E. Dougal

Morning Drop-Off

Please Review!

It's time to clean up the morning drop off routine! Our morning procedures have gotten very sloppy and the safety of all our students is at risk. When we add winter weather conditions into the mix, safety issues become even more of a concern. Following are the list of drop off reminders.

  1. Between 8-8:30 a.m., we need a constant flow of traffic dropping  off children. You pull up, your child unloads on the school side of the street, and you continue on. We know that many parents feel the need to stay until their child enters the school but please know that we have faculty and staff whose job it is to oversee their safe entrance.
  2. One way traffic around the school block; north on Eddywood, south on Wheeler.
  3. No parking on the opposite side of the street from the school.
  4. The only parents allowed to park on the school side of Eddywood Street are parents/guardians of PreK students.
  5. Parents/guardians of PreK students should park starting after the traffic cones at the main entrance of the school forward all the way up to Plumtree Road. Do not park on the opposite side of Eddywood.
  6. Parents of K-8th students: If you need to park and walk your child into school in the morning, please park on another neighboring street (NOT Wheeler, Arvilla or Eddywood) and use crosswalks to access the school block.
  7. The parking lot is reserved for faculty/staff and parishioners of Holy Cross Parish. Parents should not use the parking lot as a drop off route!
  8. St. Michael's Academy works very hard to be a good neighbor to our surrounding residents. If you need to park on the neighboring streets, please do not block driveways, etc.
  9. Please demonstrate patience, courtesy and adherence to the rules as you maneuver through the carlines. Children learn by your actions.
These procedures are for the
safety of ALL.

Attendance

Good Attendance Pays Off !

Congratulations to our perfect attendance dress-down winners! In order to qualify for the weekly drawing, a student must have no absences, tardiness or early dismissals the previous week of school. We select one from PreK - 2nd grade, one from 3rd - 5th grade and one from 6th - 8th grade.  Congrats to last week's winner.

Happy New Year From Grade 8!

A new year spells new beginnings for the 8th grade students. This is the start of new experiences, challenges, and projects. The first half of the school year has been spent preparing for the unique activities that are part of our 8th grade program here at St. Michael's. The new year is the time for action.

January is when the 8th grade students will present their SchoolsNEXT projects which they conceived, organized, and built throughout the first half of the school year. One winning team will be selected to represent St. Michael's at, first the state, and then hopefully the regional and national levels. Designing part of a school is no child's play and our 8th grade students have used many real world skills to accomplish this task. Shortly following the competition, students will begin their work on a poetry unit which will culminate in our presentation night, Poetry Café, in April.

In the meantime, students are working to learn their parts for the Living Stations of the Cross to be celebrated and presented just before Spring Break. Students will also be selecting their Science Fair topics and beginning their experiments for that competition to be held at the beginning of May.

St. Michael's Academy, and specifically the 8th grade program, work to prepare our students for the many challenges they may face in high school. We provide our students with rich opportunities to grow as individuals. They learn to work as teams, and become self-confident students who value education and can stand on their own. The new year holds many opportunities for them to showcase the skills they have learned and refined during their time here with us. We look forward to showing what our students can do!

Mass For The New Year

It was nice to start our new year off with a full school Mass as we celebrated the feast day of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Our 8th grade students were our hosts for reading and altar serving and Fr. John Connors from St. Anne's Church in Chicopee was our celebrant.
