March 14, 2019 Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the Second Sunday in Lent.

Rev. David Jackson will celebrate and Rev. Ellen will preach.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

Keeping a Holy Lent

Early Christians observed "a season of penitence and fasting" in preparation for the Paschal feast, or Pascha. The season now known as Lent (from an Old English word meaning "spring," the time of lengthening days) has a long history.

Originally, in places where Pascha was celebrated on a Sunday, the Paschal feast followed a fast of up to two days. In the third century this fast was lengthened to six days. Eventually this fast became attached to, or overlapped, another fast of forty days, in imitation of Christ's fasting in the wilderness. The forty-day fast was especially important for converts to the faith who were preparing for baptism, and for those guilty of notorious sins who were being restored to the Christian assembly.

In the Western church the forty days of Lent extend from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday, omitting Sundays. The last three days of Lent are the sacred Triduum of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Today Lent has reacquired its significance as the final preparation of adult candidates for baptism. Joining with them, all Christians are invited, in the words of the Book of Common Prayer, "to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's Holy Word."

From Anne Lamott, the New York Times-bestselling author of Help, Thanks, Wow, comes the book we need from her now: How to bring hope back into our lives. Fantastic inspiration for the new year.

"I am stockpiling antibiotics for the Apocalypse, even as I await the blossoming of paperwhites on the windowsill in the kitchen," Anne Lamott admits at the beginning of Almost Everything. Despair and uncertainty surround us: in the news, in our families, and in ourselves. But even when life is at its bleakest-when we are, as she puts it, "doomed, stunned, exhausted, and over-caffeinated"-the seeds of rejuvenation are at hand. "All truth is paradox," Lamott writes, "and this turns out to be a reason for hope. If you arrive at a place in life that is miserable, it will change." That is the time when we must pledge not to give up but "to do what Wendell Berry wrote: 'Be joyful, though you have considered all the facts.'"

In this profound and funny book, Lamott calls for each of us to rediscover the nuggets of hope and wisdom that are buried within us that can make life sweeter than we ever imagined. Divided into short chapters that explore life's essential truths, Almost Everything pinpoints these moments of insight as it shines an encouraging light forward.

For our first meeting on March 12th we will be discussing chapter 1-3.
I will hand out a discussion schedule at our first meeting.

Hope to see you there! Ellen+

For the first time playing at Emmanuel Episcopal, La Grange's very own, El Rando on Thursday March 21st.

In all honesty, the acoustic quality of Emmanuel in La Grange is close to the best in the Chicago area.  If it isn't the best. It's going to be loud and fun.

This is a fundraiser event to help fix the church pipe organ. Suggested donation of $10 at the door and cash bar. Doors open at 7, show starts at 8.

Pastoral Care
Pastoral Note

We extend our condolences to the family of Rev. Howard Lipsey upon his passing.

There will be a funeral service for him here at Emmanuel on Saturday, May 11th at 11:00am.  No reception is scheduled.

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Pastoral Care Team

Some of you may not be aware that we have a Pastoral Care Team comprised of those who have had training in pastoral and spiritual care.  Over Valentines Day our kids made wonderful hearts for the ill and homebound, which were delivered by the team.  On Ash Wednesday, our team took ashes and communion to those we knew were unable to make it to the service.

The Pastoral Care team is trained to not only offer communion but also provide spiritual care for those who are facing difficult decisions or times in their life.  If you are in need of a visit or pastoral care never hesitate to let Ellen+ or Dave+ know.  If you know of anyone who needs pastoral care or a visit please also let us know.

If you are interested in joining the Pastoral Care Team or want to know more about the Spiritual Care Visitor Training Program, through Bishop Anderson House, you can talk to Ellen+ or Dave+ or those who have graduated from the program: Stacy Jackson, Drew Beyer, or Dorren Gertsen-Briand.

Saint of the Week:
Saint Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland (386-461)

Feast Day: March 17

Saint Patrick was born into a noble Roman family on the Western edge of Great Britain, probably in Wales. His family had been Christian for at least two generations. He was captured by Irish pirates at the age of 16, and taken to Ireland, where he was sold as a slave. During his enslavement he came to believe that God had chosen him to convert the Irish to Christianity. He escaped from his captors in about 408 and made his way to France, where he became a priest.

In about 431, Pope Celestine I consecrated him "Bishop to the Irish" and sent him to Ireland to spread the Gospel. Despite resistance, he spread Christian teachings far and wide, founding many monasteries and baptizing countless people. On his death in 461, he was declared a saint, and is recognized around the world as the patron saint of Ireland and the Irish.
