Study : Students Get More Sleep With Later School Start Times
[Source: Psych Central]

A new study adds to the growing evidence that teens get more sleep when schools starts later.
The findings, published in the journal Science Advances, show that students at two Seattle high schools got significantly more sleep after start times were pushed to almost an hour later.
This boosted the total amount of sleep on school nights from a median of six hours and 50 minutes, under the earlier start time, to seven hours and 24 minutes under the later start time.  That represents a median increase of 34 minutes of sleep each school night.

When infants are playing with objects, their early attempts to pay attention to things are accompanied by bursts of high-frequency activity in their brain. But what happens when parents play together with them? New research, publishing December 13 in the open-

Free Winter Snowflakes Printable and Great Ways to Use It!
[Source: No Time for Flashcards]

For years I rarely used a single printable for preschool, but that was back when I had no kids of my own ( aka extra time), had a very high classroom budget, and didn't really understand how to use printables in a play based way. None of the printables I offer on my site for preschool are worksheets, I have a few for elementary, but even those usually have a very obvious play connection. This winter printable for preschool is a material for developing skills and play.

SLP Corner:  Using Wind-Up Toys In Speech (Beyond "MORE")
[Source: Activity Tailor]

Wind-up toys and speech therapy go together like peanut butter and jelly (or chocolate and wine, depending on your leanings).  But often therapists who see students older than toddlers/preschoolers tend to pass these mechanical gems by because they assume that they're best suited for "more" and other basic communication requests.

Career Corner: Facts To Know Before Accepting a Contract w/ Full Per Diem
[Source: Top Echelon Contracting]

By Debbie Fledderjohann, President of Top Echelon Contracting
Imagine this: You receive an offer for a school-based contract assignment that is too good to pass up.  Not only is the pay rate higher than the other offers you have received, but you would also get full per diem even though you are intending to permanently relocate your family to your new work location. Sounds like a no-brainer, right? Well, just remember, if it's too good to be true, it probably is.
