Sugar Museum Expansion Plan
Grow! Expand! Explore!

This past year was exciting as we progressed with the Museum's expansion plans.  Read Here for a timeline of what we have accomplished so far.

New Exhibit at the Sugar Museum!

The Sugar Museum has unveiled a new temporary exhibit, "Plantation Camp Housing."  It chronicles the evolution of camp housing from the earliest models, through the decades, to the end of the plantation era.

Stop by and browse the collection of camp maps drawn by HC&S in the early 1950s. Post your answer to the burning question, "How would your life be different if you grew up on a sugar plantation?" Your answer may appear on our Facebook and Instagram pages!

Exhibit is open daily, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Students Using Washboard
Education Program

The Sugar Museum's Education Program wrapped its 28th season at the end of April.  We served 1,816 students from 20 different schools on Maui and elsewhere. We are proud to carry on this important island tradition, and we are grateful for the support of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., for funding bus transportation, and our volunteer docents. Without their help, this program could not exist.

The 2018-19 year is just beginning, so make your reservations today!  Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Call 871-8058 or email Jill Lucas at education@maui.net.

Essay: My Plantation Mentality by Jackie Pias Carlin

Black snow fell in the early twentieth century too, and when it happened, we closed our windows tight and waited for it to end... Read Full Essay Here

What's New in the Plantation Store?

Did you know that every purchase in the Plantation Store benefits the non-profit museum's operations, programs and exhibits?  We use local vendors and suppliers, so the money stays right here on Maui.

We have goodies galore, as well as two different brands of local beef jerky and a new item--local Maui honey.  The purchase of "A Hui Ho" gear benefits former HC&S employees.

In Memory of John Hoxie, Jr.

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Mr. John Hoxie, Jr., Sugar Museum Strategic Planning Chair.

Mr. Hoxie was instrumental in getting the museum's expansion plans off the ground.

He began his long career at HC&S Co. in September of 1966, and served on boards for many island organizations.  John was a kind, caring man who worked hard for the Sugar Museum.  He will be greatly missed.
