December Students of the Month
Amanda Chisholm
Class of 2019

Senior Amanda Chisholm is happy she was able to enjoy this time in her life with the awesome people she gets to call her friends, who have provided her most favorite memories at North. From meeting up in the band room before school to hanging out after class. Amanda is a member of French National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, and Math National Honor Society. She is on the executive board of the Amnesty International Club, where they work to improve human rights locally and globally. Her favorite part about Amnesty is being able to work closely with Mrs. Voegele and the other amazing members of the club. Amanda’s favorite classes at North have been Chemistry and Psychology. She absolutely loves Chemistry and the labs the class did. They were some of the coolest things she has ever done. She is very proud of all the work she did in that class and still has her lab book that details all of the experiments. Amanda also found a love for Psychology when she took the class as an elective this year. Figuring out not just how the brain works, but how it affects people’s behavior is endlessly interesting. Outside of school, Amanda has a part-time job at the Red Mill Museum Village. When she is at home, she takes care of her cats and dog. Additionally, she enjoys crafting with her aunts, Escape the Room adventures, and learning about cultures all around the world. Next year, Amanda would like to attend college at either Northeastern University or Cornell University and major in Chemistry and Environmental Science.
Ella Fasciano
Class of 2019

Ella Fasciano has been on the Executive Board of Amnesty International for the past three years. Ella loves the fact the club focuses on helping people locally and around the world. She is a member of many Honor Societies at North and has been involved in Marching Band for the past four years. She loves Model UN and Youth & Government, where she was able to go to the national version of the conference and learn many perspectives from all over the country. Ella has many favorite classes at North. AP Lang and AP Lit, where she was inspired by Ms. Carr and Ms. Fedorko to grow her authentic writing. Mrs. Voegele’s AP US History helped her develop her passion for history and stories and AP Gov where every day the class thought deeply and laughed a lot. AP Psych, where Mr. Kieffer told the best stories. AP Human Geo with Mr. Maginnis helped her write while making everyone laugh with his stories. Ella’s favorite memories from North include exploring Disney with the Marching Band freshman year, having frozen hot chocolate and debating during Model UN, going to the United Nations, singing in choir, and helping the world in Amnesty International. Ella has been in Girl Scouts for 10 years and just finished her Gold Award where she interviewed elders around the community for their life story and turned those into primary sources to deepen students understanding of history. Ella is excited for college in the fall so she can keep learning all she can. She hopes to attend Swarthmore, Tufts, Dartmouth, Georgetown, or American University, where she plans to major in Peace and Justice Studies and some sort of Journalism or Political Science major.
December Athletes of the Month
Elena DiMarcello
Class of 2019

Senior Elena DiMarcello has been a top three runner for all four years of her Cross-Country career. She has helped lead a team that has won four straight Sectional titles, four straight Conference Championships, four straight Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Championships, back to back Group IV State Championships, back to back New Jersey Meet of Champions winners, and back to back to back, Nike Northeast Regional Champs. Elena’s consistent effort has helped shape one of the best 1-2-3 combinations of any team in the history of New Jersey. She is a 2017 state runner up in the mile at the New Jersey State Championships in Track and Field. Most recently, she was a key runner that led the team to the Nike National Championship in Portland, Oregon. Elena thinks it is really cool to be a part of such an amazing team. All her teammates are very close and have a lot of fun together. They all support each other through all of their challenging meets throughout the season. Elena has been running since third grade. She started running track in the Hunterdon Lions Track Club and then cross country at her middle school. Elena is very excited that she has verbally committed to run Track and Field and Cross Country at Penn State. Her parents both went to Penn State, so she got to visit a lot as a kid and has always loved it there.
John Hershfeld
Class of 2019

Swimmer John Hershfeld has been swimming competitively for five years. John recently moved to New Jersey this year from Raleigh, North Carolina where he swam with the New Wave Swim Team. Now he swims at the Somerset Valley YMCA in Bridgewater, NJ. John’s strengths include freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, and the individual medley. His best events would be the 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley, and the 500 freestyle. So far this season, John has set best times in the 100 freestyle (48.79 seconds), 100 butterfly (55.04 seconds), and 100 breaststroke (1 minute and 1.53 seconds). Next year, John hopes to attend Villanova University. Although he would be able to walk-on to their Varsity Swim Team, he would prefer to focus more on his academics at Villanova and join the club team. The commitment to the varsity team would be too much. John plans to major in Accounting, Finance, or Business while at Villanova.

Emergency School Closing - Winter Weather
In the case of actual or predicted inclement weather, the decision to close school, delay an opening or dismiss early is made after the Superintendent confers with various area superintendents, county road officials, police departments and maintenance departments, in addition to several weather services. Any change to the normal schedule due to inclement weather will be communicated to parents and staff via the methods listed below.

  • If school is cancelled:
  • A decision will usually be made by 5:30 a.m.
  • All afternoon and evening athletic events and activities will be cancelled, unless otherwise specified. Outside groups using the facility will also be cancelled. To check the rescheduling of athletic events, please visit the athletic department’s website or Twitter feed for the most up-to-date information
  • If school is delayed:
  • A decision will usually be made by 5:30 a.m.
  • School will begin two hours later at 9:45 a.m.
  • All bus routes will be delayed exactly 2 hours from their original pick-up times.
  • The decision is based upon safe traveling conditions predicted for later in the morning.
  • When school is delayed, there will not be an AM Polytech session. PM Polytech will be held as usual.

  • If school is dismissed early:
  • Students will usually be dismissed at 11:55 a.m., if weather conditions call for an early dismissal.
  • The decision will be made by 10:45 a.m.
  • PM Polytech will be cancelled

Please note: when schools are dismissed early, all afternoon, evening and athletic activities are cancelled.

The high school district uses an automated notification system called School Messenger to contact parents and staff members in the event of an emergency or if the school day schedule will be changed, such as a school closure due to snow. School Messenger contacts the phone numbers listed in our system for each student’s family and our staff members, sends an email to parents, and can also send a text message.

Technology Education
North and Voorhees engineering students came together on Friday, December 14 in the culmination of design teams evaluating and testing truss bridges using static weights. With each school having five teams each, made up of two to four students, they loaded the bridges up in 2 ½ pound increments until the bridges collapsed. As early bridges failed at 80 pounds, the interest shifted as teams passed 100lbs, 200lbs, and then 300lbs. Only two bridges remained after the 400 mark. Seniors: (L-R) Amy Carosi, Will Kastrud, Thomas Zappetti and junior, Jason Curley from North finished the competition at an impressive 522 ½ lbs, setting the bar for future competitions.

The Tech. Ed. department hopes to invite other area schools to compete next year and extend the invitation to middle schools.
