Happy New Year! A Celebration of Now
&
a Vision of Hope and New Possibilities for the Future

Dear Friend,
Happy New Year!
The new year is a period of reflection on the past, present and future - coming together in one moment in time. It is a moment where we can really embrace the concept of “be here now!”
The turning of the year provides us with a unique opportunity to make a conscious decision to let go of the past while simultaneously moving forward into our future. We honor what we have done in the past that has brought us to this moment and set our sights on a continuity of vision and passion as we set new goals.
How do we accomplish this?
Celebrating the now moment means counting our blessings, regardless of the trials and tribulations we may have encountered in the past. No matter what we have come through individually or collectively with family, friends or our larger communities, we can choose to focus on all the ways we may have learned and grown from any adversity we have experienced. In the midst of challenge, we can choose to embrace a spirit of gratitude that allows us notice and appreciate all the good in the world around us, and in our individual lives.

Carl Jung said,
"You are not what happened to you, you are what you choose to become."
This is one of my favorite quotes because it embodies the idea that we can move forward into the future, letting go of and unburdening ourselves from what has gone on in the past. We can move forward with a hopeful spirit no matter what has come before. The past does not, and should not define us. It will always impact us, but we have a choice about what that impact will be. We can’t control what has happened, but we can control our reaction to it.

This is at the heart of resiliency: welcoming both the joys in life, as well as facing the difficulties and sorrows in life, with love and compassion, which can help us transform them all into an opportunity for a better tomorrow.
It's not just what is happening to us, or even what we choose to do about it that matters.
It's also how we choose to be with, relate to, learn from and grow through what’s happening to us. This is often most important for shaping the outcome and creating our future.
Having choices is a liberating experience. It is an empowered way to respond to the challenges we face in life. When we embrace this approach to life, it enables us to be peaceful and calm even in the middle of a storm.
When we approach life in this way, it actually makes it even easier to be happy, joyful and to appreciate and take in the good stuff!
