We hope you had a wonderful (hopefully relaxing) winter break and are ready to kick-off 2019! In the event that your students didn't get enough down time, we have two upcoming four-day weekends. The finals schedule this January will run Monday through Thursday (1/14-1/17) with a school holiday on Friday (1/18) and Monday (1/21). This will be followed by a four-day weekend for Presidents' Day from
February 15-18.
Speaking of finals, encourage your students to check out or revisit Peer Tutoring. This free tutoring/homework service is free, paid for by your APC dollars, and a tremendous resource for academic guidance especially in advance of finals. Students may also want to consider dropping by the Wellness Center in advance of finals if they have yet to have a chance to do so.
Wishing you and your family a rewarding, memorable 2019!

Peer Tutoring
With finals coming up next week, your student may find themselves in need of some extra help in a particular subject (or two!). Acalanes' Peer Tutoring program provides tutoring for all students on a one-to-one basis during lunch, Academy, 7th period and after school: no appointments necessary! Tutors are juniors and seniors trained and supervised by the center's remarkable Co-Directors Mary McCosker and Fran Taylor. Please encourage your student to visit Peer Tutoring located in the enclosed hallway near the small theater.
This valuable resource is funded by your APC dollars. Thank you!
Community Service Awards Information
Acalanes provides two opportunities to recognize students for their service to our community and others. The awards include:
Acalanes Volunteer Service Award
This award is given to all students who perform the required number of community hours. (See application for details.)
President's Volunteer Service Award
This is a highly coveted award that recognizes the contributions of students who have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service and civic participation over the course of a 12 month period. Recognition starts at 50 hours for students under 16 years of age and 100 hours for students 16 years old and over.
The annual Service Award Ceremony will be held at the end of the school year. Please turn in completed forms to the Counseling Office the week of April 8 -12, 2019.

All Grades
Finals Tips -
Finals are next week. This can be a stressful time for students, but remind your children that finals are in fact just a test worth no more than 15% of their final grade. Students really need to look at what grades they have in each class and plan their studying strategically. Put the most time, energy and effort into the classes with the greatest possibility of a grade bump or holding a grade. There are grade calculating apps that are very helpful.
Job Postings
There are a number of job opportunities posted in the College & Career Center. Encourage your student to drop by and take a look.
Tuesday, January 8

From the Acalanes Wellness Center
|
|
We hope your breaks were filled with family time, down time, and play time. You may have noticed, as we did, that there was more quiet time, causing us to reflect on the nature of quiet and its effect on the nervous system. Stillness contributes to focus and mental clarity and most importantly, to our interpersonal skills. When we are quiet, we notice the people we care about. With technology being a potential 24 hour presence, the pursuit of quiet must be intentional. In the new year and in the immediate space leading up to finals, we intend to make sure students consider the value of quiet. Since it's one of the features they like most about the center, we know they'll have interesting connections.
