BOver 5,000 Locations Nationwide
Personalized service is a major benefit of banking at Capitol View Credit Union, and you don't have to sacrifice convenience to get it. Take advantage of Capitol View's shared branching services through the CO-OP Shared Branch network, and you can access your account at any of 5,000 credit union branches nationwide, often just as if you were visiting our own branch.

The CO-OP Shared Branch network links participating credit unions electronically, allowing credit union members to do "branch banking" even when the branch near you doesn't belong to Capitol View. This is a huge benefit to Capitol View members who travel, whose workplaces don't coincide with our branch location, or who simply enjoy the convenience of expanded access.  Wherever you are across the country, chances are good there's a shared branch near you.

Shared branching is yet another example of credit union membership offering the best of both worlds-individualized attention and nationwide availability.  The cooperative spirit of credit unions allows them to work with each other in ways that competing banks typically do not.  Visit www.co-opsharedbranch.org to find branches nearest you.  You can also look for the "CO-OP Shared Branch" logo at participating credit union branch locations.

At CO-OP Shared Branch locations you can:
  • Make deposits and withdrawals
  • Make loan payments
  • Receive loan advances
  • Access VISA® or MasterCard® funds
  • And much more

Many shared branches also offer transfers, statement histories, money orders, traveler's checks and notary services.  Since services vary from one location to another, check with individual branches before your visit for a complete menu of available services.

ESpring Break Travel Tips

With spring break travels on the horizon for many Iowans, here are some valuable tips to safeguard your money while you are away from home.
  • Notify Capitol View of your travel plans. It is always recommended that you notify Capitol View of any upcoming travel plans. Capitol View protects our cardholders with fraud monitoring tools. Those systems are likely to consider your travel suspicious unless otherwise notified. Please notify Capitol View of your travel plans at least one week prior to your travel.
  • Lighten your wallet. While traveling, you might be tempted to over-pack. However, it is important that you trim down your wallet to only the essentials for trips. This would include cash, a credit card, your debit card, and your ID. Remove any card that includes your social security number. For health insurance cards, the Identity Theft Resource Center, a nonprofit organization focused on identity theft prevention, suggests making a copy of the card and removing the last four digits of your Social Security number. Bring the photocopy with you on your trip and leave the original card at home.
  • Use credit cards for major purchases. Credit cards are more practical for travel purchases. They do not tie up money in your checking account with authorizations and, in the event it is lost or stolen, unauthorized transactions are easily disputed.
  • Pack a backup credit card. It is a good idea to have a least one backup credit card. It can be useful in the event your primary card is lost, stolen, or even if you experience problems during purchase authorizations. Your spare card should be kept separate from your wallet for safe keeping.
  • Protect your cash. Like your backup credit card, you should have an emergency set of cash that you keep separate from your wallet. Avoid keeping large amounts of cash in your wallet and use your credit card for large purchases.
  • Beware of fake ATMs. Thieves have been known to place fake ATMs in high traffic tourist areas in order to obtain card data. Be sure to only use ATMs located in banks, airports, or hotels. You can also search worldwide atm locations on Visa and MasterCard's websites.
  • Use hotel safes. Do not treat your hotel room like it's your private home. Even in very reputable hotels there are many staff that may have access to your room. Keep valuable items with you or locked in a room safe.
There is plenty of room for stress while traveling, but you can minimize your financial stress by keeping these tips in mind. If you have upcoming travel plans, be safe and enjoy your trip!

"Saving For The Holidays With Every Paycheck"
For many people, adding up holiday expenses each year can result in a daunting number. After you consider things like decorations, events, and gifts, many times the totals end up in the hundreds, even thousands of dollars. However, when you break it down throughout the year, it becomes far more manageable.

According to many financial planners, families are recommended to spend no more than 1.5% of their annual household income on the winter holidays. For example, a family making $50,000/yr should spend no more than $750 on the holidays.

To calculate your recommended holiday budget, complete the following equation:
$(Annual Household Income)
x  0.015
=  $(Recommended Max Budget)

Once you have determined your recommended max budget you can calculate how much to save each paycheck in order to reach that goal. Simply divide your max budget by the annual number of paychecks you have (if you are paid biweekly this would be 26 - if you are paid semi-monthly this would be 24). For a family making $50,000/yr paid biweekly, they would need to save $28.85/paycheck.

Keep in mind that this calculation is based on a full 12 months of saving. If you start saving in January 2019, you'll meet your goal by January 2020.

To calculate your savings per paycheck, complete the following equation:
$(Recommended Max Budget)
÷  (Annual Number of Paychecks)
=  $(Savings per Paycheck)

Be sure to consider your other monthly expenses when determining this total. Once you have determined what to save, you can easily setup an additional savings account, automatic transfers, or payroll deduction with Capitol View. Then, sit back and let the saving begin!

Contact Capitol View to setup an additional savings account, automatic transfers, payroll deduction, or if you need help figuring your numbers. This is yet another way you can simplify your life and save money with Capitol View!
