Moreno Valley Responds to Powerful Rain Storms
|
On January 20 and January 22, the City of Moreno Valley activated its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and the Departmental Operations Center (DOC) to manage the City's response to two significant storm events.
Although more than three inches of rain fell during the two storms, pre-storm preparation and vigilance by City staff greatly reduced flooding of homes and local streets.
The EOC and the DOC coordinate responses by Public Works crews, Animal Services, and the Fire and Police Departments to ensure the safety of the community. Teams actively monitored “hot spots” affected by the heavy rains and dispatched crews to clear roads and respond to other storm-related issues.
Public Works crews also cleared storm drains, and temporarily closed roadways to safeguard motorists until water drained from low lying areas.
The Fire Department also worked closely with the County of Riverside's Emergency Management Department to monitor regional traffic conditions which affected Moreno Valley.
The Public Works Department would like to thank the community for maintaining private drainage courses which is so very important to prevent area flooding.
The City also activated Alert MoVAL, our Emergency Alert and Warning Notification System, to quickly notify residents of storm information and advise of potential hazards.

Police Officers Recover Boy's Missing Therapy Dog
|
It was an accident that Princess escaped. It was a team effort that brought her back to Justin.
A garage door inadvertently left open by a family member that allowed the pups to make a run for it from the Moreno Valley home they shared with the Lopez family.
Princess, a white English Bull Dog, and a white Poodle named Noodle dashed out in pursuit of fun and adventure.
Noodle turned up in a Craigslist ad a few days later and was brought home, but Princess was still missing. Dogs go missing all the time. But Princess isn’t just any dog. She’s a therapy dog for Justin Lopez, an 11-year-old Moreno Valley boy with cerebral palsy and autism.
When social media, lost dog fliers, and walking their neighborhood still didn’t bring Princess home, the Lopez family turned to the Moreno Valley Police Department for help.
Police officers don't usually handle calls for lost pets, but this was a very special case. Officers pounded the pavement, turning up video surveillance tapes from a nearby gas station that showed Princess being loaded into a rental car rented in the City of Rosemead.
With the help of the Temple City Police Department, which services the Rosemead area, Princess was found and returned to Justin.
“He was like crying and laughing and very emotional,” Mary Lopez, Justin’s mother told
the Press-Enterprise. “Last night they slept together like old times. (Princess) was snoring all night.”

Battle of the Badges Blood Drive
|
Staff from Moreno Valley City Hall and the Police Department rolled up their sleeves to donate blood for the police department's annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive held on Wednesday, January 25.
Harsh winter weather conditions across much of the United States created a serious shortage in blood donations, making this year's event more important than ever. This week's blood drive helped ensure that blood is available to accident victims, premature babies, cancer patients and many others.
The Battle of the Badges began in 2007 as a friendly competition between public service agencies to see who could collect the most blood donations. It has since become the nation’s largest and most successful law enforcement and public safety blood drive campaign.
Every day, the Red Cross must collect enough blood to meet patient needs at hundreds of local hospitals and trauma centers. Blood donations dramatically decline during the holiday season when schools are on break and many people go on vacation. The lifesaving blood collected during the Battle of the Badges highlights our local law enforcement heroes for going beyond the call of duty.

New Market, Ice Cream Shop Open for Business

The Community Development Department welcomes a new place to satisfy your sweet tooth.
All American Ice Cream and Frozen Yogurt opened a new quick service restaurant at 14475 Moreno Beach Drive, Suite 104.
The business is a nice compliment to the Moreno Market Place center serving ice cream and yogurt treats along with sugar-free or lactose-free products for those with special dietary needs.
Community Development also welcomes the long awaited completion of the Farm Market at the corner of Alessandro Boulevard and Redlands Boulevard bringing a new shopping choice to the residents on Moreno Valley's east side.
This 5,000 square foot market provides various meat and food products and will be serving pizza with future plans to expand the menu.

Homeless Point-In-Time Count
|
Volunteers spread out across Moreno Valley on Tuesday, January 24 to count and help identify locations where homeless people live and receive services.
Volunteers from a variety of organizations, including Riverside County agencies and local homeless service providers and area residents assisted in the count.
Volunteers also distributed kits that included hats, gloves and hygiene items and a list of phone numbers for homeless services. Bags of dog food for homeless pets were also handed out.
The annual effort was part of an effort throughout the region. Information collected will ensure continued federal funding for homeless programs, assist in developing strategies to end homelessness, and provide help for homeless children and families in need.
Homelessness counts are also taking place across the United States as part of the national effort to address chronic homelessness.

Library Contractor Awarded Modern Library Award
|
Library Systems & Services (LS&S), which operates the Moreno Valley Public Library, was the recipient of a gold award at LibraryWorks' third annual Modern Library Awards (MLAs.)
The MLAs recognize the top products and services in the library industry. Winners were selected based on evaluation by users of the applicants' products and services.
Judges scored entries on a factors such as functionality, value, and customer service.
Receipt of the Gold award means that the operator of Moreno Valley's Library excels at providing services and makes a positive impact on local communities.
In addition to the Moreno Valley Public Library, LS&S operates more than 80 public and special libraries, around the country through public-private partnerships.
