The data set shows a non-white majority in the urban-suburban enclave, at a 42.5 percent Hispanic and Latino majority, 40.1 percent white, 10.9 percent Asian and 3.6 percent black. Since 2010, the Valley's population has increased by 6.3 percent to 1.86 million people. By comparison, the population of Los Angeles County overall increased by 4.8 percent.

The census study of the San Fernando Valley, as its own official entity, was lobbied for in 2006 by Valley politicians, including Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks, who shared his analysis of this year's findings with the L.A. Daily News. The boundaries for the data set include cities of Glendale and Burbank on the east and San Fernando, Calabasas and Agoura Hills toward the west.

According to the data, Valley residents have an 11 percent higher median income than the average American household, at $64,059. That's up from $61,033 in 2016, which was closer to this year's national household average, $61,372. The average household income in Los Angeles County in 2017 was $57,654.

Kenn Phillips, President and CEO of The Valley Economic Alliance, also said the information is crucial to overseeing local economic development and business assistance programs, such as an ongoing study of the economic impact on communities affected by the Woolsey fire.

"Getting accurate numbers are crucial. We're so close to 2 million people here in the Valley. Our needs are great, so just at face value, it's important to have these numbers and show that," he said.
