We are now less than a week from the Blue Jean Ball, our 50th anniversary gala recognition of Greensboro Urban Ministry's half-century of service to the community.

I spent the morning today in east Greensboro before coming to the office, and I have to say, talking about a party is the last thing on our minds. And yet, perhaps there is no better time to mark the many years of impact the community has had through Greensboro Urban Ministry. I can tell you, especially in light of the terrible destruction left by this week's tornado -- our work has never been more critical than right now.

Seeing the many people across our city who are coming together to clean up, deliver food, clothes -- and hope -- is truly inspiring. We've extended Potter's House lunch hours to 1:30 and waived the limit on times families affected by the storm can receive food assistance. And today, our Weaver House shelter director, Michael Pearson (photo inset) delivered needed towels and underwear to the shelter at Windsor Recreation Center.

The aftermath of a crisis has many timelines -- immediate and longer-term. At Greensboro Urban Ministry, we are looking at the long road ahead for our neighbors, and we are positioning this agency to walk alongside as many people as we can.

So whether you have bought a ticket, sent a donation, or even sponsored the event, please know that next week's Blue Jean Ball is about much more than a fun party. It's about celebrating impact, and what we can do, together. At the event, we will be announcing more about our plans to assist storm victims. If you can't be with us at the event, please watch our social media accounts and your inbox because we will be sharing more.

Events help us raise awareness and funds for the people who most need our help. If you have not purchased a ticket and would like to, the information you need is below. The ticket donation, $50, represents $1 a year for every year we have been working together. Pretty good deal, don't you think?

Thank you so much for your support!

On behalf of those who need us,

Myron Wilkins,
Executive Director
Greensboro Urban Ministry
