Design work begins
on sports complex
Lakeway and Travis County officials met Tuesday to discuss traffic impact and utilities at the site of the Bee Creek Sports Complex in Lakeway.
Travis County Senior Engineer Odette Tan said that the design team got a notice to proceed in June to start working on the facility's layout.
The county also began an environmental survey on the site that will include a stream survey and assessment for the Bee Creek watershed.
Tan said the county would host a public meeting later this year to collect input on the proposed designs.
Voters approved $23 million in a 2017 bond election to build a sports complex with synthetic turf fields, sports lighting, hiking, biking, and walking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, and other site improvements.
The City of Lakeway purchased the land, and Travis County will fund the improvements for the public facility that Lake Travis Youth Association has first rights to reserve for use.
Keep our kids safe
As the school year begins, Lakeway Police Department urges drivers to be alert and stop for children at crosswalks and bus stops.
Keep an eye out for crossing guards entering roadways or school buses displaying a flashing stop sign as heads up that schoolchildren are nearby.
Also, please remember that Lakeway and Bee Cave are hands-free cities.

Seats are filling up fast for the Heritage Trail Tour on Sept. 14.
The free bus tours depart at 9:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. from the Lakeway Heritage Center, 963 Lohmans Crossing.
Docents inform and entertain more than 800 participants with facts and humorous anecdotes from the history of Lakeway and Lake Travis.
Lake Travis Fire Rescue and app developer SafetyCulture recently launched the Lake Travis Fire Rescue-Home Ignition Zone Assessment, an iPad application that produces a site-specific wildfire readiness report for homeowners.
This assessment application produces a comprehensive report, or to-do list, for homeowners with pictures and descriptions that can assist them in significantly reducing their homes from igniting in a wildfire.
To schedule your free wildfire assessment, contact Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Chris Rea at 512-645-5840 or crea@ltfr.org.
The city has contracted with WLE to plant 16 new trees on or around Sept. 5 along Lohmans Crossing to beautify one of the major gateways into Lakeway.
The plantings from RM 620 to Emmaus Catholic Parish will replace many trees that have died over the years.
Two of the trees will be 30-gallon Texas mountain laurels, and 14 of the trees will be a mix of 10- to 15-gallon Texas persimmons, possumhaws, yaupons, and mountain laurels.
Total cost of trees plus planting comes to $5,900. Drivers may expect temporary lane closures.
