Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22. This year, a major effort of the Earth Day Network is being made toward ending plastic pollution. Of course, there are many ways that you can be more environmentally friendly besides recycling plastics. How will you celebrate Earth Day 2018 - and beyond?

   Saving the Earth

What began almost five decades ago as a protest against industrial development, has grown into a  world-wide event. In the US, the Environmental Protection Agency was established; the Clean Water Act as well as the Endangered Species Act, among other laws, were enacted as a result of that initial protest. Today, nearly 200 countries participate in Earth Day festivals, community clean-up efforts, educational forums and many other activities all focused on raising awareness to environmental dangers and protecting the planet through dedicated actions.

Earth Day-related activities go far beyond simple recyling efforts. This year's theme, End Plastic Pollution, joins a multituide of campaigns that the Earth Day Network has launched. From Reforestation Projects to Climate Literacy to Faith & the Environment, there is no shortage of opportunities to get involved.
 The Rs Have It

Want to get in on the action? There are a number of things you can do in the privacy of your   home that will supplement the efforts of those around the globe. Here are a just a few everyday   examples to get you started.

 Reduce

- use of plastic bags: carry canvas totes for groceries and other retail purchases

- electricity: power down electrical devices overnight and when not in use

- running water: turn off the tap while brushing your teeth

 Re-use

- a lunch box and travel mug to enjoy home-prepped meals at work. school or on the go

- glass jars by filling with dry goods for a picturesque pantry

- the blank side of printed paper for jotting down notes

 Recycle

- bottles, cans, paper and plastic. Check out the guidelines for curbside collections, transfer stations and and swap centers in your community.

The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to ideas on how to live a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle. Just a few quick and easy changes in your own household can have a big impact, first in your home, then on the world. Happy Earth Day!
