DIOCESAN CONVENTION 2019
|
|
The convention for the Episcopal Diocese of Utah will be held April 26-27, 2019, at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Salt Lake City. Registration, a convention fact sheet, tentative schedule, nominations and resolutions will be posted to the diocesan website's
convention page.
Bishop Hayashi has determined there is not a need for a pre-convention meeting.
This convention, we will be electing deputies to General Convention 2021, which will be held in late June or early July in Baltimore, Maryland. There will be four deputies from each order, cleric and lay, and four alternates for each. Under the resolution passed at the 2017 Diocesan Convention, the diocese will reimburse reasonable expenses for all deputies and the first alternate from each order who attends the full General Convention. Pursuant to resolution, no other alternates from either order will receive reimbursement for any expenses or compensation to attend the convention.

Information about Diocesan Offices Open for Nomination
|
|
Members of the church see election news about the offices of our diocese each year as we prepare for our Diocesan Convention. We realize that duties of the offices are not widely known at times. Therefore, our communications office has prepared a brief thumbnail summary of these offices. Of course, the descriptions are only a sampling of the important work that each office and officer undertakes. Full descriptions are found in our diocesan
canons
and
constitution
. Additionally, eligibility of candidates is also found in the canons. Diocesan officers and the clergy encourage more and more people consider the ministry of being on a governing board or office of the church.
Standing Committee
: In addition to being a council of advice to the bishop, the Standing Committee consents to the purchase, financial encumbrance, and sale of diocesan property. The Committee also gives consent for ordinations within the diocese and consent for the ordination and consecration of bishops in other dioceses. It also serves as the ecclesiastical authority of the Diocese when there is no bishop. The Standing Committee also has oversight of the process for electing a Bishop. The Standing Committee meets monthly.

Diocesan Council:
The Diocesan Council develops, adopts and monitors the annual budget of the Diocese, as well as advises the Bishop on financial issues. A Finance Committee often recommends various budgetary items, however the Council maintains approval powers of the budget. Council also has oversight concerning Diocesan programs, and discusses strategic planning. Diocesan Council meets the first Saturday of the month at the Episcopal Church Center of Utah, those outside of the Salt Lake metro area can often join the meetings electronically.
Treasurer:
The Diocesan Treasurer oversees the management of Diocesan funds and of the CFO, controller and other accounting managers. The treasurer also acts as the financial agent for the Diocese.
Disciplinary Board:
The Disciplinary Board serves largely under the canons of Title IV of the wider church. The Disciplinary Board is responsible for carrying out the procedures given to it during cases of reported cleric misconduct.
General Convention Deputies:
General Deputies will meet in late June and/or early July in Baltimore in 2021 for 12 days. There are also pre-General Convention meetings in Utah.

The Rev. Tyler Doherty Called to be the New Dean of The Cathedral Church of St. Mark
|
The Vestry of The Cathedral Church of St. Mark voted unanimously to call The Rev. Tyler Doherty to be the Cathedral's new dean and rector. Tyler+ has accepted this call. While the paperwork is being finalized (according to the Canons of the Diocese of Utah) he will be referred to as "Dean Elect".

Diocesan Youth Winter Retreat 2019
|
Winter Retreat 2019 was one to remember!
With record snow fall up at Camp Tuttle, we needed to move our winter retreat to a new location. We spent the weekend in The Historic Wasatch Mountain Lodge which was built in 1929 located up at Brighton Ski Resort.
It was easy access to the ski hill, along with sledding, snowshoeing and playing in the snow. We also enjoyed each other's company with playing music, games, coloring and making blankets for homeless youth.
Thank you to The Rev. Kurt Wiesner and his family for joining us for this fun snowy adventure with the youth!

The diocesan book club meets weekly at the ECCU. Everyone is welcome!
The group chooses books from a wide range of interests.
Our current book is “The Soul of America” by Jon Meacham. The assignment for Monday, March 11 is the introduction to the book, then about one chapter a week.

"The Trouble with Resurrection"
|
The Rev. Charles Robinson, Rector of St. Luke's in Park City, has announced the upcoming "Jesus Seminar on the Road" Conference, sponsored by Utahns for Religious Scholarship. It will be held March 15th and 16th at the First Unitarian Church in Salt Lake City.
This year's seminar is titled "The Trouble with Resurrection," and asks the question, "what does the New Testament really say about resurrection?"

Chrism Mass and Renewal of Ordination Vows

Bishop Scott B. Hayashi will preside and preach over the Chrism Mass, considered of the most solemn and important liturgies of the year.
The Bishop will bless and distribute Chrism oil for clerics to use throughout the year in healing and baptisms. Additionally, clerics will renew their vows of ordination. It is also a tradition in our diocese that the clergy also gather for a picture on the steps of the Cathedral. While the service involves clerics, the laity is most welcomed to be part of this meaningful service of the Church.
