Every nonprofit has a life-cycle; some can be very long and last for many years, while others can be quite short in comparison. Nonprofits shut down for a variety of different reasons. One agency might dissolve due to a change in the market, another due to changing policies or guidelines, like we are experiencing with the new Department of State regulations. Some agencies merge with other firms to combine assets and/or save on accreditation costs, like we saw happen in 2008 when The Hague was ratified. Some directors may retire or are unable to continue providing services altogether due to the outright exhaustion or stress that directing a non-profit can cause, what some people refer to as the "burn out" factor.

Beat The Heat - Wildfire Risk Management

According to the
National Interagency Fire Center
, there were 71,499 wildfires in 2017, compared to 67,743 wildfires in 2016. About 10 million acres burned in 2017, compared to 5.4 million in 2016. The facts are clear...it's getting hotter and drier out there.
With our change in climate, we now have warmer winters and longer, hotter summers. You may think that you're not in a fire prone area, but wildfires do not discriminate. Flying embers from a fire miles away can put your buildings and operations at substantial risk. Urban sprawl is a major contributor to the increase in wildfires, as people & businesses are moving out of the cities and relocating to more urban areas.
The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IIBHS) says a proactive approach gives you the best chance of protecting your property, employees, and minimizing financial losses from a wildfire.
Risk Management Tips:
- Assess your property/buildings and be aware of your surroundings
- Secure building eave & vent openings, protecting them from flying embers
- Keep property clear of brush, dead trees, leaves and other combustibles
- Fire proof your roof (i.e. no wood or shake shingles)
- Have an evacuation plan
- Have proper insurance in place
A few simple steps can be the difference between minimal to no damage to a complete loss. Let's be fire smart this season!

The term 'Group Home' can cover a variety of different living scenarios. Group Homes generally provide care and services to teens or adults with mental, behavioral or physical disabilities, and/or individuals who suffer from addiction and require daily supervision.
According to the
Child Welfare Information Gateway, in 2016, 5% of the 437,465 children in the foster care system lived in a group home setting.

Friends of COF Benefit Golf Tournament
Spring Hill, KS.
COF Training Services Inc.is a nonprofit social service organization serving
individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities. They provide access to a variety of services and resources, as well as giving individuals an opportunity to increase independence, productivity, and integration into the community.
The annual
Friends of COF Benefit Golf Tournament was held on June 7th, 2018, in Spring Hill, KS., at the Sycamore Ridge Golf Course.
Sandy Zuck, H&A Account Manager (pictured) represented Hawley & Associates at event. The location was beautiful and was the perfect venue for Sandy to show off her amazing golf skills (or per Sandy, the lack of skills!).
We were honored to be a part of such a remarkable event and look forward to supporting COF and their incredible mission!

WACAP 5K Fun Run
Seward Park, WA.
WACAP (World Association for Children & Parents) is a leading adoption and humanitarian aid agency, based out of Seattle, WA. Since 1976, they have placed over 11,500 children with loving adoptive parents and provided food, medical care and education to more than 200,000 children worldwide.
The 1st Annual 'Race for Home' 5K Fun Run was held on May 6th, 2018 at Seward Park in Seattle, WA. Proceeds from the event went to support the work of WACAP, in helping them find permanent homes for children waiting in US Foster Care and internationally.
Our team name was the "Hawley Roadrunners" and we had 5 team members represent H&A at the event. The event raised $21,000, and succeeded their goal!
