AUSD Statement on New Zealand Shootings
We join people around the world in expressing our sorrow for the victims, families, and friends of those killed in the shootings in New Zealand, and we extend our sincere support to the Muslim families in our own community.
As a school district, we denounce such hateful actions and pledge to continue our efforts to teach students the ways of peace, acceptance, and healing. We encourage our families and our staff to review the resources on talking to students about hate crimes that we provide on our
Tools for Family Conversations page and our
Anti-Bias Curriculum page.

New Program Helps Girls Develop Leadership and Collaboration Skills
A program launched by Girls Inc of the Island City this fall is helping elementary school-aged girls develop self-awareness and self-esteem, as well as leadership and collaboration skills. The new program is just one part of the district's growing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support program. That story is

Maya Lin School to Screen Film on Restorative Justice
On March 21, the M
aya Lin Social Justice and Equity Team is hosting a screening and discussion of
Healing Justice
, a film about the need and potential for restorative justice.
From the producer's website:
Our newest film,
Healing Justice, explores the causes and consequences of the current North American justice system and its effect on marginalized communities. The film walks back through the history of violence that has led to our current system, bringing into focus the histories of trauma - on a personal, interpersonal, community, and generational level.
This powerful documentary addresses the school-to-prison pipeline, the need for comprehensive criminal justice reform, and the importance of healing and restorative practices.
Dinner will be provided at 6 pm; childcare for potty-trained children is also available. Please RSVP here, so the organizers can plan accordingly.

Haight Renaming Essay Contest
To solicit student voice on the idea of renaming Haight Elementary School, the Haight Renaming Committee, in partnership with the
Alameda Sun
, is holding an essay contest. The contest is open to AUSD students in grades TK-12. Details are available on
our website
. The winning essays will be published on the AUSD website, the Rename Haight website, and in the
Alameda Sun.
The deadline is April 5, 5 pm.

April 3 Rally for Education Funding an "Unusual Partnership"
Educators, board members, district administrators, and families from across Alameda County are heading to Sacramento on April 3 to demand that the state provide more money for public education.
"
Issues of funding have plagued public schools in this state now for decades," says Superintendent Sean McPhetridge. "It is time for all of us who care about our students and our future to join forces and declare that California children and California educators deserve the same resources as their peers in other states." AUSD and AEA Open Negotiations
AUSD and the Alameda Education Association (which represents teachers, counselors, nurses, and speech and language pathologists) opened negotiations on a successor agreement this week. Much of the first session was focused on setting future negotiation dates and establishing ground rules for negotiations. The two teams also began a discussion about bringing teachers' salaries within the county average. The District team felt that the first session was very positive and looks forward to the next session, which is scheduled for March 28.
