This Sunday is 'Good Shepherd Sunday' and we hear in our Gospel reading that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for us and to whose voice we must listen in order to lead fulfilled lives of meaning and purpose. This puts me in mind of a quotation from a book of monthly readings from C.S. Lewis given to me by my sister. One of the quotations for the month of April is from his book Mere Christianity and reads as follows:

"A Christian society is not going to arrive until most of us really want it; and we are not going to want it until we become fully Christian. I may repeat "Do as you would be done by" till I am black in the face, but I cannot really carry it out till I love my neighbor as myself; and I cannot learn to love my neighbor as myself till I learn to love God; and I cannot learn to love God except by learning to obey God".

It reminds me that just getting on and listening to the voice of the Good Shepherd and obeying his commands through concrete acts, such as praying, attending worship and putting love into action through acts of charity, is how we lay the foundation of faith, as opposed to hoping for the best or waiting to 'feel' faithful. Faith is like taking on running a marathon - you don't hope you can manage it, you practice for it.

Yours in Christ, Adrian

Offertory Anthem
The composer of our offertory anthem, Bobby McFerrin, dedicated this piece to his mother. He also writes: "I wrote this feminine version of the 23rd Psalm to address a group of singers who felt excluded by the patriarchal aspects of the Bible. However, if anyone in your group is uncomfortable with this version, please choose the word (SHE or HE) that most suits your group's spiritual preference. Whether we visualize or praise the Lord in terms of gender or in other personal ways, the beauty of the 23rd Psalm is in the worship and in the music."

Prayers for Outreach Partners
We have started a practice of praying each week for one of the St. Andrew's outreach partners in the Prayers of the People. The outreach partners are charities that the parish supports with our time and donations from our parish budget. The aim of this new practice is both to hold the work of these charities in our prayers, and to familiarize the congregation with the different charities we support as we put our faith into action as a parish.
