Join Us Opening Night for RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World
Vision Maker Film Festival April 20-26
Vision Maker Media is bringing
Vision Maker Film Festival - April 20-26, 2018 - Lincoln, Nebraska
Native storytelling and film to life at the seventh biennial Vision Maker Film Festival. More than 30 new films by diverse filmmakers will be showcased at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, April 20-26.

Join us Friday, April 20, for the opening reception and presentation of the Frank Blythe Award for Media Excellence to Buffy Sainte-Marie (Cree) and Harriett Skye, Ph.D. (Hunkpapa Lakota)

The reception will be followed by RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World, which explores how the Native American influence is an integral part of music history, despite attempts to ban, censor and erase Indian culture in the United States.

Working with filmmakers of color on all levels is a key focus of this week-long film festival, from inspiring future filmmakers to polishing fine skills and providing knowledge of professional resources. Our partners in the National Minority Consortia (NMC) will each share their feature documentary films and bring filmmakers of color to Lincoln to work with emerging filmmakers.  Local Native youth can learn from professional documentary producers during workshops. Public registration is also available, April 22-24.

Teachers, students and the public are encouraged to attend and learn about a variety of cultures. Vision Maker Film Festival is screening stories of social justice, hope and overcoming adversity throughout this powerful event. For the full schedule visit visionmakermedia.org/festival.

Maoriland Film Festival in New Zealand and Augsburg University
Highlights from My Travels

By Shirley K. Sneve
Executive Director, Vision Maker Media

Vision Maker Media was well-represented at the fifth annual Maoriland Film Festival in Otaki, New Zealand.  MANKILLER and RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World were featured in the festival that included indigenous films from all over the world. I was honored to accept the People's Choice Award for best documentary on behalf of Valerie Red-Horse Mohl and Gale Ann Hurd for MANKILLER

In addition to seeing some great films (and eating amazing meat pies), there were some really interesting and meaningful industry sessions. Native Minds: My Fil m,
My Language featured Pauline Clague (Winda Film Festival), Summer Wharekawa (Maori Television), Liisa Holmberg (International Sami Film Institute) and Actor  Rawiri Paratene. The panel talked about the use of Indigenous language in film.

This was my first trip to this part of the world (with a layover in Brisbane, Australia)-and my first experience with walking and driving (I didn't...)
on the leftside of the road.

I stopped in the Twin Cities on my way home to present films at Augsburg  University. Elise Marubbio put together a program that featured programs on  Native American Conversations on Law Enforcement, Justice and Redemption. John Gwinn, Binesi Means, and Tiana LaPointe of Migizi Communications joined me for a panel discussion about our films.
