The Skokie Home Scoop - April 20, 2018

Dear Skokie Families,

We were thrilled to welcome families from Crow Island, Hubbard Woods and Greeley this past Tuesday evening for 5th grade orientation.  Our newest fifth graders begin with this initial welcome to the school, followed by a visit to Skokie on Friday, May 25 for Shadow Day.  These opportunities to familiarize with the building, meet our staff and buddy up with a current fifth grader are great ways to ease the transition from elementary to middle school, and are designed to be a celebration too!

As the year begins to wind down, I wanted to remind you of two parent learning opportunities coming up:

Friday, May 11: Coffee and Conversation, 9:30am--Skokie Community Room
A themed group discussion and opportunity to connect with other middle school parents around the topic of anxiety.

Friday, May 18:  Winnetka Parent Institute, 9:30am--Skokie Community Room
"Not Quite Little Kid, Not Quite Teenager:  The Developmental Progression of the Adolescent Brain"  Join Dave Kanne and Kelly Tess for a presentation that highlights the biological reasoning behind why our adolescents behave the way they do during these vulnerable, formative years.

Finally, next week marks Earth Week and five days of themed activities in our building.  Our students and staff can look forward to the following:

Monday:  Wear Green in support of Earth Day!

Tuesday:  Trash Free Lunch:  Pack a lunch in re-usable containers to minimize our waste!

Wednesday:  Walk or bike to school!  Green Apple Day of Service--student clean-up will take place in our school garden

Thursday:  Conserve Energy--Turn off the lights and reduce power use!  Skokie will hear from a speaker on the impact of waste and recycling

Friday:  Arbor Day

The weather will finally warm up a bit this weekend, so enjoy the sunshine and look out for muddy shoes!  We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday.

Most Sincerely,

Kelly Tess

Extension for a Cause!

This year we are excited to offer a new opportunity for the students, their families, and staff that are not shaving or donating their hair.  Rather than losing hair, students can add hair by purchasing and wearing a colored hair extension. This year, we are offering GREEN to represent solidarity for St. Baldrick's and a means to show solidarity for the children going through chemotherapy.

Hair extensions are available for a minimum donation of $25.00.  Cash and checks (made out to Winnetka Public Schools) will be accepted.  Participants can choose which organization (St. Baldricks or Wigs for Kids) they want their donation to support.  Forms to reserve your extension can be found in the front foyer.

Babe hair extensions are a highly reputable company. The tape in extensions are made with 100% Indian human hair. They have been dyed the Kelly green and treated so they won't fade and will easily wash. They can be easily removed with baby oil and or rubbing alcohol applied to the adhesive. The tape in extensions will last 4 to 6 weeks  they will last longer if properly cared for. They can also be re used if they want to come in to the Hair Lounge and reapplied.  The hair Lounge #847-446-5600. Or winnetkahairlounge.com

Future Ready D36
The next School Board Regular Meeting, which will include a presentation on Future Ready D36, will be held at Hubbard Woods School (please note location change) on April 24 at 7:15 p.m. It is anticipated that the Board will approve an Educational Master Facility Plan in June 2018. Earth Week News
Sunday, April 22nd is Earth Day. Working in partnership with our PTOs and District Green Team, we will be recognizing this holiday in several important ways next week (4/24-4/28) and wanted to give you a heads up so you can work with your child to recognize this important day at home, as well. Please see below for details:
Monday, April 23 - Mother Earth Monday
Education/awareness. All administration, faculty/staff, and students:Wear Green! Have discussions about and increase awareness of ways to be sustainable in our schools and at home every day. Discuss sustainability and Earth Day and what it means.
Tuesday, April 24 - Trash Free Tuesday
If you bring a lunch to school, use a reusable lunch bag or box and reusable containers for everything inside; if you buy your lunch, make sure you recycle all the containers and packaging that you can. Talk about ways to consume less and how to reuse and recycle what you don't consume rather than putting it in landfill.
Wednesday, April 25 - Walk/Bike to School Wednesday
Everyone is encouraged to use active, non-motorized transportation to get to and from school. If bikes, scooters or skates are used, please be sure to wear a helmet. If you need to drive, try to carpool. Discuss the environmental (and safety and health) benefits of fresh air, movement, and fewer vehicles on our roads, and fewer emissions in our air.
Thursday, April 26 - Therm Thursday
Turn off the lights in school and at home and otherwise try to reduce electricity use throughout the day. Discuss therms, energy, and electricity. Discuss turning off lights in general and especially when you leave a room. Use technology less. Unplug - literally and figuratively.
Friday, April 27 - Arbor Day - Think about the trees and what we can do to keep our trees and plants healthy and growing.
