YEAR IN REVIEW
MABTR 2018 Finances & 2019 Goals
MABTR is excited to start a new year. 2018 brought us new rewards, challenges, milestones, and new friends and fans.
Stats
In 2018 we saved 273 lives.
Thank you to everyone involved as this would not have been possible without you!!
We are proud to state that we rescued 157 puppy mill survivors in 2018. That is 57.5% of our 2018 intake. This is a 19% increase from previous years. We are finding with the decline in pet stores that breeders are not slowing down production so puppies are landing at the puppy mill auctions, which MABTR attends. Of the 157 saved, 95 were Bostons under the age of one year old. The number of puppies at the auctions in 2018 has been extreme and these numbers have never been so high as they were this year. A few auctions this year had 50 plus Boston puppies up for bid. Note that MABTR has a reasonable cap per vendhead and remember those Bostons that MABTR does not save land in the hands of the next breeder. When we attend an auction we bid on all Bostons regardless of age, gender or color. They all deserve a second chance and a better life than what lies ahead.
MABTR prides itself on the ability to give commercial breeder (puppy mill) dogs a second chance at life.
Click here to learn more about puppy mills.
Our second largest intake for 2018 were owner surrenders at 32%. 87 dogs that were handed over to us by their owners or MABTR solicited them as they were selling their dog online (i.e. craigslist, Facebook). This is a 12% drop from last year. We encourage families that are in the position of needing to rehome their dog (after training has been exhausted) to please consider rescue services. Remember people will tell you what you want to hear in order to get your dog even if they are not the right home.
Our last category for intakes are those from a shelter. MABTR took in 29 dogs from local shelters; this is a drop from previous years. We continue to build relationships with local shelters as we know not all dogs will thrive in such an environment and space is always an issue. We take in those that are deemed unadoptable due to health or behavior and when the shelter is in need of space.
Background
MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue is run by volunteers with caring hearts. We are funded completely by donations, and we can't achieve our mission alone.
Not one person in the MABTR family is paid for their work even Jennifer, the founder.
Generous donations
from kind people like you sustain us with the financial support necessary to care for the hundreds of homeless Bostons we take in every year. Donations and volunteer help are both crucial to our existence. Click here to make a monetary donation today so our work continues successfully.
There are also other ways, other than money, that you can make a difference in these precious lives.
Whether it is....
-babysitting a dog for a night til his next leg of his transport or a foster opens up
-spreading the word to friends and family to ADOPT, Don't Shop
...All these acts of kindness and more allow us to make a difference in the lives of these precious Bostons.
2018 Financial Report
*We currently have 14 dogs in foster (up for adoption or not ready to be placed). $10,510 of uncollected adoption fees are from those still in foster care and for adoption fees yet to be collected (this could due to the dog still in their trial period or adopter is past due).
We experienced a 6% increase in medical expenses. We saw a large increase in high medical bills and medical challenges of these wonderful souls.
A new stat shared this year is our lives lost. We had to say good-bye to 11 Bostons (4% of our intake) that came into rescue in 2018 but never were adopted out for various reasons. This number has always been a small percentage of our intake. Six dogs that came in during 2018 remain in hospice care.
A big THANK YOU to our event coordinators across multiple states that helped raise 31% of our cash flow and to our monetary donors that make up 28% of our cash flow. Adoption fees do not come close to covering medical costs.
2019 Goals
With every successful organization there are goals to be achieved in order for our mission to be accomplished together. MABTR's family and efforts will continue to grow and accomplish the following goals in 2019.
- Grow our foster homes. Always at the top of our list. MABTR cannot operate without foster homes. The more foster homes we have, the more Boston Terriers we can save. We are actively seeking foster families in Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. Click here to learn about fostering.
- Build our volunteer base. Volunteers are needed in the areas of helping at local events and transporting.
- Implement new fundraising opportunities (i.e. Monthly Auction)
- Redesign the Boston Bay shopping page (continues from 2018 goals)
- Fill the following open positions:
- St Louis, MO Event Coordinator - to schedule, plan and execute MABTR associated events in the St Louis area. This individual will need to plan to attend all scheduled events.
If you have an interest in one of these positions please email luckypawpals@aol.com for additional details.

What is tax deductible for 2018?
MABTR is a 501c3 organization. All donations of any size made in 2018 are tax deductible. This includes miles driven during transporting, items (used or new) donated to be used in foster care (harness, leash, towels, medication, etc) or for raffle/auction items, and monetary donations of any amount.
NOT tax deductible are listed below. Simple rule of thumb is if you are getting something in return it is not tax deductible.
- adoption fees
- purchase of chances for raffle items
- purchase of an auction item
- event entrance fee
- purchase amount of items on Boston Bay

MEDICAL CORNER
Low thyroid
Low thyroid is very common in the Boston breed and many times is overlooked by both the owner and the vet.
The most common signs of low thyroid in dogs include:
- A lack of energy and enthusiasm
- Mental dullness
- Weight gain without a change in appetite
- Obesity, difficulty losing weight
- Cold intolerance
- Loss and thinning of fur, increased shedding
- Thickening of the skin
- Slow / difficulty recovering from an injury or surgery
How to diagnose: the only way to know what your dog's thyroid levels are is through bloodwork. The recommended test is a T4. Some vets will include a TSH level test as well.
The first thin
g MABTR looks at is the coat and hair along the back of the legs. A thin coat and bald back legs is a key sign for us to test the thyroid.
Normal range starts at 1.0. Many vet will see test results between 1.0 and 1.4 and state that the thyroid is fine. It is import
ant to note that thyroid levels vary throughout the day and when the blood is drawn. MABTR rule, especially when presented with the above symptoms, is if we have a test result of 1.4 or lower we automatically place the dog on medication because more likely there are points in the day that it drops below 1.0.
For Bostons with juvenile cataracts, we always test the thyroid event when symptoms do not present themselves as low thyroid and juvenile cataracts are usually paired up.
Treatment: Levothyroxine, the same medication humans take for low thyroid, is used. Given either once or twice a day. Strongly recommended that once the medication is started that you retest in 30 days to ensure proper dose. If thyroid is in the normal range then retesting is only required once a year.
This medication can be purchased through your vet or at a human pharmacy with a prescription from your vet. It is a very inexpensive drug to give your dog and some pharmacy have a discount program that will include this drug
If not treated:
There is no excuse not to treat low thyroid. The drug cost on average is $10 a month. Low thyroid impacts your dog's body to heal in a timely manner after an injury or surgery. If not treated your dog will eventually face mental decline, heart disease, decreased lung function, and abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland.

Looking for a good place to get your dog's prescriptions online?
We are often asked if we have a recommendation for an online store for dog medication.
MABTR uses https://www.allivet.com and highly recommends it. Great prices, easy to set up auto shipping that offers a discount and they work with your vet on prescription medications.

If it is too cold outside for you
then it is too cold outside for your dog
MABTR is always asked if we have a preferred sweater for our Bostons Our choice is the Stretch Fleece by Gold Paw.
1. The spandex material allows it to stretch to fit tightly on the dog. For male dogs no hanging material underneath to get wet during potty breaks.
2. It allows for the harness to be worn over it comfortably. 3. Lastly it does not stretch out loosing it's fit or shape. We have dogs wearing it 24/7 and a week later looks as if you just put it on. Most bostons fit in a size 14
Some stores and online shops also carry them

Adoptable Dog of the Month
Hi, my name is Otis. I am 11 years old and weigh 16 pounds. I need a new home because I was not able to adjust having children in the home. I am being fostered in St. Charles, MO.
I am a splash - a white Boston with colored markings.
I love cuddles, riding in the car, playing, treats, walking outside, and sleeping with my foster parents.
I have been trained on simple commands. I have a very loving heart and a good bill of health from my vet.
I get along with any dogs, other people, strangers, and older children.
Do not let my age fool you as I still love to play!
I am not good around young children, as I startle easily.
I need a loving, secure home with lots of cuddles.
***Eligible for the Golden Paws Program!***
Adopters aged 60+ years who adopt a dog aged 7+ years get $50 off the adoption fee!

"We adopted Fiona from MABTR in October 2017. We were not really sure what to expect, but she fit Into our family right away like she knew this is where she was supposed to be. She has brought so much joy to our life and also to her adopted brother Pugsley.
We like to say her name fits her perfect as she is like a little princess. Some of her favorite things are laying in the sun, playing and snuggling with Pugsley, curling up under the covers for a good nap, chewing on a bone or tearing the stuffing out of her toys and trying to make friends with the neighbor rabbits - no luck with that yet.
Fiona has such a special place in our heart. We can't imagine our life without her. Thank you to MABTR for bringing Fiona into our life we can't imagine it without her.
"

12 dogs rescued
in December!
273 dogs rescued in 2018!
3,621 dogs rescued since November 2005!
We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.

AGE is
just a number
I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.
Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.
MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
*gender *age
*disability *health
