Community Spirit on Full Display at MyMoVal Open House
Hundreds of Moreno Valley residents took the opportunity to learn about volunteer opportunities to give back to their community at the MyMoVal Community Engagement Open House this week.

The event marked the official debut of www.MyMoVal.com , an online portal designed by the City to easily connect community members to volunteer opportunities while providing a forum for nonprofit groups to post events where volunteers and community resources are needed.

Representatives from Moreno Valley nonprofits, churches, community organizations as well as City-run programs, including Keep Moreno Valley Beautiful, Community Emergency Response Team, Adopt-a-Neighborhood and City Boards and Commissions, provided attendees with information about how these programs benefit the community – and how to get involved.

The MyMoVal Community Engagement Open House was spearheaded by Council District 4 Council Member Ulises Cabrera. Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez and members of the City Council were on hand at the event to meet with community members.

Officers Help Moreno Valley Couple in Need
Five Moreno Valley police officers went above and beyond the call of duty when they recently responded to a stolen car battery at Riverside University Health System.

A couple who went to the hospital to seek medical treatment returned to their car only to discover the battery had been stolen. They called the police for help.

Officers noticed the couple had a pile of belongings in their car and learned the couple had been living in their car.

Touched by their circumstances, Moreno Valley Police Officers Manolo Milian, Norman Cenizal, Michael Buelna and Dartanan Scott and Cpl. Ole Williams pooled their money and bought a battery for the couple.

They didn’t stop there. They also installed the battery for them.

“I personally felt good about it. We solved her issue,” Officer Milian told the Press-Enterprise. “It doesn’t matter if it’s out of our pocket. She was going through a lot, and I think we actually did something for the community and someone. It gives a positive light of law enforcement.”
Firefighters Prevent Brush Fire From Reaching Homes
Quick action by firefighters from the Moreno Valley Fire Department battled extreme heat and prevented a brush fire from spreading to a nearby school and homes in north Moreno Valley last week.

Temperatures were well above 110 degrees on Friday, July 6 when firefighters responded to a report of a fire near the intersection of Morton and Gernet roads. Engine and Medic Squad 6 arrived to the scene to find a vehicle engulfed in flames in addition to two to three acres of brush. Firefighters from CAL Fire/Riverside County Fire, Riverside City Fire, CAL Fire aerial assets, hand crews and bull dozers also responded.

Firefighters quickly contained the fire to 10 acres, putting it out before it reached the nearby community and potentially saved hundreds of homes.
Weekend Weed and Litter Abatement Program Keeps MoVal Beautiful
A vital part of the City’s ongoing efforts to “Keep Moreno Valley Beautiful” is the Public Works Department’s proactive Weekend Weed and Litter Abatement Program. The program provides weed and litter removal services on major thoroughfares and along non-landscaped parkways throughout the City.

During the weekend of July 7-8, the program focused on the right-of-way areas along Kitching Street, Sunnymead Boulevard, Perris Boulevard, and San Michele Road.

The program relies heavily upon community service worker participants associated with the County of Riverside’s alternative sentencing program. Last year, program participants worked 31,480 hours and cleaned 105 linear miles of right-of-way and removed 476 dump truck loads of litter and dry vegetation.

The Weekend Weed and Litter Abatement Program offers a great opportunity to partner with local agencies to utilize alternative no-cost resources to ensure that our neighborhoods and streets are clean and comfortable for all those who live and work in Moreno Valley.
