April 20, 2018                                        5 Iyar 5778
Yom HaZikaron at TABC
TABC marked Yom HaZikaron with an assembly for the entire yeshiva. Dr. Prager read part of the moving eulogy delivered at the levaya of the IDF's most recent fallen soldier, Sgt. Eliyahu Drori. You can find the text here. The yeshiva then heard from Michael Goldman (son-in-aw of Rabbi Ezra Wiener) who served in the IDF during the last operations in Gaza. He poignantly described how one of the members of his unit was killed and urged our students to live their lives in a meaningful way, to ensure that the sacrifice of all the soldiers was not in vain.

Yom Ha'Atzmaut Celebrations
In celebration of Yom Ha'atzmaut, and with a deep understanding that our Return to Tziyon has brought to life Zera'im, and B'ezrat Hashem Kodshim and Taharot as well, the broader TABC community made a siyum on Shisha Sidrei Mishnah in honor of Yom Ha'atzmaut.  Mishnayot were studied by our talmidim, parents, alumni, faculty, and administrators. Our Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Adler, made the siyum, and addressed the blessings of the full flowering of Torah in Medinat Yisrael as a realization of the vision of Yeshayahu HaNavi, "that from Tziyon the Torah shall go forth, and the word of Hashem from Yerushalayim."  The siyum was followed by a beautiful chagigah led by our own Shim Craimer, and concluded with Israeli style food from Sababa Grill. TABC is deeply proud of its commitment to religious Zionism, as evidenced by this unprecedented siyum in honor of Yom Ha'Atzmaut, and of all of our alumni who have made aliyah and served in Tzahal. May our recognition of Hashem's gift of Medinat Yisrael serve as a merit through which we will merit the full redemption. For more photos, click here.

TABC Blood Drive Breaks Record
TABC's Spring Blood Drive broke records! For our first time ever, 72 units of blood were collected, and we couldn't be prouder. As each unit helps three people, there are now 216 people who will be helped by the generosity shown by our faculty & students. Kol hakavod! Thank you to nurses Linda Moed Cohen & Nancy Bleiberg and to committee members Ezra Finkelstein '18, Aryeh Lejtman '18, Doni Weber '18, Matan Rockowitz '19, Nachum Freedman '18, Zach Schreiber '18, Daniel Deschino '19, Rafi Kreitman '18, and Ari Whitehead '19 for all their hard work coordinating and making it happen. Thank you, also to Poppy's, Sammy's, Dunkin Donuts, Dougie's, Chopstix, and EJ's for their donations to feed our donors and keep them going throughout the day. For more photos, click here.

Yom HaShoah and George Orwell
Mrs. Shavelson's English 10Aers enjoyed incorporating the insights and perspective of Dr. Moshe Avital, this year's TABC Yom HaShoah speaker, into their analyses of the great dystopian novel, 1984 . In which ways was the society Hitler created for the Jews in the camps and ghettos "Orwellian"? How did the choices and struggles of Dr. Moshe Avital in Auschwitz and Buchenwald parallel or diverge from those of the protagonist in Orwell's novel? And finally, how can the famous 1984 slogan, "Big Brother Is Watching You," apply to the Nazi regime, or to totalitarian (or even to American) societies today? According to George Orwell, Stalin's Soviet Union and Hitler's Europe are cautionary tales themselves, no less Orwellian than the fictionalized Oceania in 1984 . We must be vigilant. Never again.

Rabbanit Shani Taragin
Addresses Y18
The Y18 shiurim had the zechut to hear a shiur from Rabbanit Shani Taragin on Friday. Her shiur was on "Yom HaShemini and Yom HaShoah: Acceptance and Atonement, as she wove together the parsha with today's commemoration of Yom Hashoah.
Rabbi Krinsky Gives Mishmar at Yavneh
Last Thursday evening, Rabbi Krinsky joined Yavneh Academy for mishmar.  In honor of March Madness (and then delayed by snow days) the Yavneh middle school had an evening of Torah and sports.  Rabbi Krinsky, who is known for his sports themed divrei Torah , was invited to speak to the 6th graders.  The program started with a dinner of pizza and French fries.  Rabbi Krinsky then shared with them the story of Herschel Walker, who overcame racism and severe bullying, to become one of the greatest college football players ever.  With determination and hardwork, Walker trained daily to transform himself from an small overweight child into a superior athlete. This story helped explain the importance of counting sefirah everyday.  One of the messages of sefirah is to remind us that working on ourselves is something that you need to do everyday, day in and day out, and not haphazardly.  Just like Walker grew through his daily exercises, so too we can grow if we work on ourselves day in and day out.
