Market Development Activities for 2018-19
Brian Hawrysh |  [email protected]

BC Wood just received confirmation of funding for our 2018-2019 market development activities. Last November, BC Wood's staff began the process with sector meetings that were intended to gather input on Industry's marketing priorities. BC Wood took this input and put together a comprehensive package of market development activities. The proposals that resulted were submitted in mid-December to both Federal and Provincial funders for review and eventual approval.

The proposed activities focus on expanding market share in Canada and the United States, while maintaining the hard won presence that we have gained in the Asian markets.

Recognizing the on-going need to continue our push into emerging markets, BC Wood has also scheduled a mission and participation in a trade show in Mexico in August, 201 8. The Global Buyers Mission, celebrating our 15th year, will be bigger and better than ever, with an anticipated 3 50 + buyers and specifiers coming to Whistler September 6th to 8th.

I would like to recognize and thank the staff of BC Wood for the extra effort they put towards writing these funding proposals , as well as the Industry representatives that provided their own input at the meetings and through our member survey. The result is that BC Wood has another strong program of approved trade events and activities for 201 8-201 9.

Labour Market Research Project: What's in it for your Business?

BC Wood is leading a project, funded through the BC Sector Labour Market Partnership Program, to investigate the labour market challenges facing BC's value-added wood products sector. The labour market information (LMI) gathered through this project will help industry and employers understand and respond to changing labour market demands. Using the information, Industry and employers can make informed plans, choices, and decisions for a variety of purposes, including business investment decision-making, career planning and preparation, education and training offerings, job search opportunities, hiring, and public or private workforce investments.

How Can You Help?
To the meet the research objectives, it is critical that the project is informed by direct and broad-based input from Industry. To ensure information gathered is reflective of industry's experience, BC Wood will be calling on employers to respond to a short 10-minute on-line survey. An on-line employee survey will also be available for you to pass on to your workers that will gather information to get a snapshot of their experience. *Expect the survey to arrive in your in-box mid-March 2018.

Industry News
James Higgins and Vick Yau were fresh out of UBC when leading manufacturer Lynden Door took interest in their innovative vented door creation. But getting their company VanAir to that stage and beyond was quickly accelerated with the help of B.C. agencies that specialize in local wood projects.

Higgins and Yau were working from a rented woodshop at UBC when they had a chance encounter with Lynden Door. Their door was installed at a professor's office, and after seeing the product, Lynden Door sent teams to go over testing and manufacturing with the young company.

Launching an innovative product

The VanAir vented door provides ventilation in interiors without sacrificing acoustic and visual privacy. The door allows air to flow from one side, through its core, and out the other side.

Excellence in structural and architectural wood design recognized at 2018 Wood Design Awards in BC

VANCOUVER, Feb. 26, 2018 - Innovative architectural and structural design in taller and larger mass timber buildings headlined the 2018 Wood Design Awards event at the Vancouver Convention Centre (West). The 14th annual event, organized and hosted by Wood WORKS! BC, honoured excellence in wood building and design, and recognized leadership and innovation in wood use. Nearly 500 guests attended this year's celebration of wood, including distinguished building and design professionals, owners, local and provincial government representatives, industry sponsors and guests.

Penetrative Fire Retardants

An ounce of prevention can save lives. That is why it is imperative to make wood products fire retardant. However, there are many types of fire retardants to choose from. For architectural millwork, Penetrative Fire Retardant, for both interior and exterior use, is quickly becoming the best choice.

Like the traditional types of fire retardants, Intumescent and Impregnation, Penetrative Fire Retardants have a Flame Spread Rating of Less than 25 (Class A fire retardant), while also having many added benefits. Examples include no salts that cause luminescing of the wood, can be stained, or clear coated over with compatible products all while having no negative impact to the aesthetic of the wood. Unlike the traditional alternatives, Penetrative can be applied to LVL, Glulam, and more. It is also non-toxic, LEED compliant, and can be factory or site applied.

For more information on Fire Retardants, please contact Menza Bouwman at [email protected].
Tradeshow Tips/Advice
Expanding Your Booth
Skyline Trade Show Tips

CEIR's 2018 Marketing Spend Decision Report reveals that exhibitors plan to expand their median booth size by 20% this year. Is it time for you to do the same? Consider these five critical factors when determining whether it's time to increase your footprint.
  • Revisit your original goals. An old adage in trade show marketing is to start small, and expand later. If you began with that same mindset but have been working with the same exhibit space for many years, it may be time to return to your original 5- or 10-year plan for your booth space.
  • Take stock of your calendar. If you've made tweaks to your trade show calendar in recent years (and who hasn't?) it may be time to assess whether you still have adequate space for each of the shows you attend. Examine the available layouts and costs at each of your key shows, to see if a larger booth is physically or financial practical.
WoodTALKS Update
Ken Hori  |  [email protected]

This is my first Wood Connections after taking on the WoodTALKS program (formerly known as the Specifiers Program). Roy Manion has now retired, but is working with me during this transition period.

The first term looks to be very active with lunch and learn seminars, group seminars, and tours - all in the process of being booked. We are also in the preliminary planning stages for WoodTALKS at the GBM this coming September.

As it is the beginning of our fiscal year, we are taking the time to meet with companies that have participated in the program last year, as well as those who wish to join this year. The WoodTALKS programming provides BC value-added wood manufacturers the opportunity of meeting with the very influential specifier community (architects, designers, engineers, developers, builders, and contractors) to educate them on the value-added wood products and services available from our industry here in BC. Participants in the program receive the added benefit of establishing themselves as trusted industry leaders and building their client bases. For more information on how your company can become involved in WoodTALKS, contact: Ken Hori at BC Wood at [email protected] or 604.882-7100.
China Market Update
Interzum Guangzhou 2018
Jim Ivanoff  | [email protected]

BC Wood once again returned to the Interzum Show in Guangzhou, China from March 28th to 31st. This is the largest wood working show in Asia and an excellent entry point for members targeting China's remanufacturing industry, as well as the construction lumber market. Every time I go, I am still amazed by the sheer size of this event. The Guangzhou exhibition site is one of the largest in the world and the entire facility is used for Interzum. Every imaginable material, component, and machine used for the manufacture of furniture and millwork is on display here.

Interzum is also a very international show in terms of both visitors and exhibitors. Once again, the United States had a very large presence anchored by the American Hardwood Export Council, but their area also included softwood producers. Germany and Turkey also once again had large presences, while countries such as France, Chile, Poland, Italy, etc. were represented with smaller booths. In the BC Wood booth, we were able to meet with buyers from all parts of Asia, the Middle East, as well as Europe. Overall, the show was busier than last year and participating members reported having received very good inquiries.

BC Wood organized the Canada Wood Pavilion at the show and we were able to secure a more central location parallel to the large USA pavilion this year. Clients were able to easily find us in this spot along the hall's main aisle. We once again used an open concept for our pavilion which not only maintains a professional appearance, but also maximizes a smaller pavilion footprint.

Interzum continues to be an extremely important trade show for BC Wood in promoting Canadian softwood to the Chinese remanufacturing industry and we plan on participating again next year.
USA Market Update

A few comments, suggestions, and ideas...

An interesting read in this mornings Tree Frog News for a couple of reasons. The opening starts off with a comment that the Canadian forest industry continues to do well despite timber supply issues and the CVD. My findings in the the US market echo that of Tree Frogs take. The single family residential and multi-family construction sectors continue their strong growth, certainly across the Western United States, where we focus the majority of our activities. While I get the occasional question from builders or distributors on the CVD and it's effect on wood products pricing, most  comment that "nearly all building products costs have increased by 20%". it's an interesting time to be in the US construction market.

On another note, it is nice to see an article on CLT and their continuing acceptance and growth into the US construction sector. This time it's Penticton based Structurlam who supplies CLT to a light commercial construction project in Northern California -  the first building in California made entirely of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT).

Read more: http://www.digitaljournal.com/pr/3739702#ixzz5D9sq3RCp

The architect on the project had praise for the CNC manufacturing capabilities, which allowed for the design and manufacturing of "complex geometry with ease and little costs". Kudos to Structurlam on the supply of CLT on this project.

Finally, on the market development front, as most of you know, we will be participating in the PCBC builders show June 27-29 in San Francisco. While we are sold out for exhibit space, the opportunity for promotional activities including test market samples to 25,000 plus architects, builders, and distributors is still available on a limited basis. If it sounds of interest, please contact me at [email protected]

Europe Market Update
BC Wood at the BAU 2019 Show
Munich, German - January 14-19, 2019
Brian Hawrysh |  [email protected]

BAU is the largest and best known building products show in the European market. The BAU fair, held every two years, attracts over 270,000 attendees. Some 55,000 of these attendees come from neighboring Western European countries and the ex-Soviet Bloc countries. A unique feature of the BAU show is that it consolidates companies featuring wood products and wood building systems in one of its sixteen halls. So while the show is very large, the majority of potential customers for wood based products and building systems are concentrated in one display hall.

While the show is not for another ten months, its' high-profile means that the show sells out quickly and our organizational efforts need to start now.

Throughout Western Europe and particularly in resort regions that have a high percentage of second luxury homes (such as the Alps in France, Germany, and Italy and the Pyrenees region of Spain and France), there exists good potential for manufacturers of log and timber frame homes. The BC handcrafted style, featuring large diameter logs and heavy timbers, have a unique appeal to these wealthy homeowners.

High quality finished building materials such as decking, siding, roofing, flooring and millwork are all in demand. Specialty lumber such as Douglas-Fir, Hemlock, and a range of hardwoods are also highly sought after by manufacturers in the emerging markets of the post-Soviet bloc countries.

BC Wood plans to organize a large display at the BAU fair for member companies and other Canadian forest products associations. Space is limited, so, for more information regarding the BAU show, BC Wood's participation and costs, please contact Brian Hawrysh at 604-882-7100 or directly at [email protected].
