Vote Alachua Update
March 2019
From the Supervisor

The 2019 City of Gainesville Regular Election is here!

In my Gainesville Sun column this month, I encouraged the Gainesville community to buck the trend of low voter participation in city elections. You can read my column here: https://www.gainesville.com/opinion/20190308/kim-a-barton-kick-trend-of-low-city-voter-turnout .

I hope that everyone who is eligible decides to have a say in how their city is governed. Big decisions that affect our everyday lives are made at that local level. You can view the sample ballots for this election — in both English and Spanish — by clicking here .

If you have any questions, please reach out to me.

Respectfully,
Kim A. Barton

Vote Alachua Team Spotlight
Darlene Runyon

Darlene Runyon is an on-call staff member who assists with outreach events, petitions, proofing and processing voter registration applications.

She is a Portland, Oregon, native who has a background in Interior Design. When her career suddenly ended and she was no longer able to do design work, Darlene became involved with the Vote Alachua team by becoming a poll worker in 2012.

She likes assisting the canvassing board and helping the elections process wherever she can.

Outside of work, she enjoys celebrating life through putting together themed parties, creating large-scale wall murals, roller-coastering, skydiving, and volunteering at her local church.
Supervisor Barton celebrated her 26th work anniversary at the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections on Feb. 15! She was originally hired in 1993 to work as the office's outreach coordinator and eventually was promoted to director of outreach prior to election in 2016.
Supervisor Barton met in February with Senator Keith Perry to discuss the 2019 Legislative Priorities for the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections.
Logic and Accuracy testing for the 2019 City of Gainesville Regular Election was held March 6. Following rigorous, public testing, the voting equipment was found to be ready for all phases of the election.
Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell was on hand to swear in deputy election workers for the 2019 City of Gainesville Regular Election.
Happy Birthday to the 68 pre-registered Alachua County voters who celebrated their 18th birthdays last month and became registered voters!
Our office held voter registration and information events at every Gainesville Housing Authority property prior to the Feb. 19 voter registration deadline for the 2019 City of Gainesville Regular Election.
Our office conducted much of its annual high school outreach program during the week of Feb. 25. Every year, we attend all Alachua County high schools and provide information on elections, as well as register and pre-register eligible students to vote.
Our office was happy to assist people in registering to vote at GRACE Marketplace last month. Many self-identified as returning citizens whose rights were restored by the enactment of Amendment 4.
