 How Bad are Wildfires in Siberia? Only Russia Knows. While the United States watches the fire season heat up in the West, on the other side the world, Siberian wildfires are scorching forests and sending up smoke plumes visible from space. But read the official Russian fire data and the numbers tell a very different story. According to a
bulletin released yesterday, the Russian Federal Agency for Forestry reports that there have been 103 forest fires covering 13,935 hectares across Russia, to date.

Research Balloon Breaks Tether, Floats Away Before Falling into the Beaufort Sea.
A 13-foot-tall research balloon that was to float into the clouds on a mile-long tether above Alaska's North Slope broke its line and fell into the Beaufort Sea, officials said Thursday, triggering a notice of a potential hazard to aviators and causing the loss of thousands of dollars' worth of scientific equipment.
Attached to its tether, the helium-filled balloon was being used in a project aimed at better understanding clouds and the state of the water they hold.

 BLM Seeks Comments on Drilling Proposal. An environmental review will soon be underway for the newest proposed oil and gas production well within the boundaries of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A), which covers 23 million acres on the North Slope. If approved, the oil and gas development project known as Greater Mooses Tooth 2 would be the second of its kind to be authorized on federal lands within the reserve, according to a news release Monday from the Bureau of Land Management.

Russian Icebreaker to Host International Conference on Arctic Stability. Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued an instruction to hold an international conference on Arctic strategic stability and partnership aboard the nuclear-powered icebreaker 50th Anniversary of Victory. The document is posted on the official legal information website, Interfax reports. According to the document, the nuclear icebreaker 50th Anniversary of Victory will sail from Anadyr to Pevek on August 29 through September 2. During the voyage, an international conference, By the Northern Sea Route Towards towards Strategic Stability and Equal Partnership in the ArcticStrategic Stability and Equal Partnership in the Arctic, involving representatives from other countries, Arctic Council members, observer states and members of the international public will take place aboard the ship.

Bridging the Future of Arctic Social Science Research, September 23-24, 2016 (Monticello, Virginia, USA).
The event is sponsored by Arctic Horizons. The event will reassemble the members of the National Steering Committee and a small but diverse selection of representatives from the five regional workshops, to total about 15 people. The aim will be to identify and synthesize the core threads of the previous workshops and public contributions proffered between workshops. The target output for the workshop will be a final report draft and outline of steps leading to the final report release in June 2016. The Jefferson Institute will manage production of the publication.
