December 2018 DASNY News & Updates
From the President & CEO: Reflecting on a Successful 2018
I am excited and inspired to embark upon a new year. As we prepare for the endless opportunities ahead of us in 2019, I would like to take a few moments to reflect on what we have accomplished over the past 12 months.

Under the One DASNY initiative, we have implemented numerous improvements at DASNY. We have streamlined processes, increased the flow of information and the speed of decision-making, deployed new technology, and expanded our financing and project delivery methods.

We have promoted a culture of continuous improvement across all services, demonstrating that DASNY is a customer-focused, valued partner capable of solving problems.

We are applying what we have learned to advance our mission and better assist our partners in higher education and health care. The transformative impact of One DASNY is already visible in our $685 million hybrid tax-exempt/taxable financing with Montefiore Health System

DASNY’s public finance business continues to demonstrate its strength in the market. Bond issuances totaled approximately $9.1 billion in 2018, despite the impact that the repeal of advance refunding has had on the municipal bond market.

Construction has a pipeline of 1,009 projects valued at more than $6.6 billion as of October 31, 2018. We are enhancing our alternative delivery capabilities, as demonstrated by our successful use of design-build to deliver the $24 million, 263-bed residence hall at SUNY Brockport.

The success of the Brockport project has helped pave the way for the $750 million, design-build New York State Life Sciences Public Health Laboratory in the Capital Region and the $27.8 million, 257-bed, design-build residence hall at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica

With design-build we are able to incorporate earlier in our general conditions Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs) and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Businesses (SDVOBs) goals. We are at our best when we are inclusive for all. Diversity fuels creativity, and innovation ultimately follows.

We are also innovating and expanding our sustainability offerings by combining a newly updated energy performance contracting program with our Tax-Exempt Equipment Leasing Program (TELP) and procurement services. In addition, we are collaborating with SUNY and NYSERDA on the development of a zero-net energy retrofit residence hall project at SUNY Oneonta, which will be a model for future residence hall renovations throughout the SUNY system.

Together, we are advancing New York State’s support of innovation, social impact, growth, and inclusion, positioning DASNY to enter 2019 as a national leader in each of these important sectors. I look forward to continuing this journey together.

Distinguished Management Leadership Series
In an effort to allow its students opportunities to engage with industry experts, John Jay College of Criminal Justice recently launched its “Distinguished Management Leadership Series.”

DASNY President & CEO Gerrard P. Bushell was invited as its first speaker. On November 29, Dr. Bushell addressed a group of graduate students at the college based in Manhattan. Dr. Bushell spoke about the importance of public service and understanding the role DASNY plays in serving all New Yorkers.
Psychiatric Center in Central New York Re-opens after
Multi-Million-Dollar Renovation
Hutchings Psychiatric Center in Syracuse has re-opened after a multi-million-dollar overhaul.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on November 27 for the completion of the facility’s $50 million multi-phase inpatient building renovation project. DASNY managed the design and construction of the project.

“The new inpatient buildings at Hutchings Psychiatric Center will also give our staff a modern, state-of-the-art environment to provide high quality care,” said Office of Mental Health Commissioner Dr. Ann Sullivan. “We are thankful to everyone involved in this renovation and are excited to provide services within this new space.”

The renovations included a consolidated Treatment Mall to serve adult patients, a skills-teaching kitchen, computer lab, multisensory space, creative arts studio, dance movement studio and classrooms with interactive media capability.
2018 Greenbuild International Conference
From November 13-15, members from DASNY’s Construction Division attended Greenbuild, the International Green Building Conference, in Chicago. This year’s theme was “Human X Nature,” encompassing the intersection of humanity and the environment – a reminder that green builders are making sustainable buildings and communities accessible to everyone, and in doing so, are lessening the impact on the natural environment and raising the standard of living for people all around the world.

DASNY’s expertise in finance, design, and construction provides our organization with knowledge on how to build healthier, sustainable communities to assist New York as it moves toward a carbon-neutral future.

DASNY’s attendees benefitted from a selection of approximately 130 education sessions, access to hundreds of industry leaders, experts and frontline professionals dedicated to sustainable building.
