Special Library guest

The library has had a special guest for the last week. This pileated woodpecker ( Dryocopus pileatus ), presumably a young male, has been making himself known to library staff and visitors alike by repeated flying onto the window sill at the rear of the library and striking at his reflection in the glass. The term "pileated" refers to the bird's prominent red crest, with the term from the Latin pileatus meaning "capped". His presence is somewhat unusual in this area as pileated woodpeckers usually inhabit the deciduous forests in the Great Lakes, the boreal forests of Canada and parts of the Pacific coast and are non migratory. Stop by and see him if you get a chance; he is a beautiful bird!

Science Communication: Conflict Management

Conflict management training for graduate students, early career scientists, and all others welcome!
No one ever said communication in a science arena was uncomplicated! Conflicts abound and can be intense, passionate, frustrating, stressful, and sometimes overwhelming! In the lab, in the field, at a meeting, at a conference, with lab-mates, co-workers, professors, administrators, the media, regulators, politicians, funders—the scientific landscape is fraught with potential conflict, but fertile ground for mediation and negotiation.
Conflict management and negotiation involves both one's head and heart. No matter how hard you try to stay rational, emotions often get in the way of effective resolutions. In the Science Communication: Conflict Management Workshop, Southern Miss Communications graduate students address how to deal with negative emotions and stimulate positive emotions to facilitate conflict management. This is a 2-hour interactive session where you learn about the 5 core concerns to remember in conflict management. The workshop includes short lectures, group activities, case study analyses, and mini-role playing. You will recognize how to move beyond reason and use positive emotions to help reach a wise agreement.

"What is Aquaculture, and Why do we need it?"
The supply of wild capture fisheries is stagnant worldwide and with a growing demand for seafood and a growing population we need sustainable protein sources. It has been clear for decades that the growth in seafood will come from aquaculture. Come learn how aquaculture can provide safe, sustainable, healthy, local seafood.
