March 20th and will begin at 4:30 p.m. The second meeting will see discussion on our programs and services and strategic priorities.

CHB Wellness Grant Funding
|
|
County Programs Receive Community Health Board (CHB) Wellness Grants
Wellness Funds are intended to support the implementation of the CHB community health plan recommendations by funding local community projects that use a population health approach, addressing the Social Determinants of Health, such as income, education, social supports, and early childhood development.
A total of 53 applications were submitted totaling an overall request of $108,000. The CHBs had $47,879 available and were able to award 36 grants to 25 different projects.
The Municipality received funding for three separate programs:
-Brown Bag Lunch program in Parrsboro
-Food Pantry at the Teen Centre in Springhill
-The installation of an accessible beach mat at Heather's Beach.

Partners for Climate Protection Program (PCP)
The Municipality of Cumberland recently joined the Partners for Climate Protection program. Sarah LeBlanc of the Cumberland Energy Authority attended a celebration event for the program and accepted a recognition award on behalf of the municipality.
The Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program is a network of more than 200 Canadian municipal governments committed to reducing GHGs and acting on climate change. PCP is a partnership between the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability. It is the Canadian component of ICLEI's international Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) program.

FORCE Board of Directors Membership
We are pleased to announce that Ray Hickey, Executive Director of the Cumberland Energy Authority, has joined the Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE) Board of Directors in February.
The Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE) is Canada's leading research centre for in-stream tidal energy, located in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia.

Fundy Shore Winter Carnival
The inaugural Fundy Shore Winter Carnival took place from February 14-18, 2019 and we believe that it was a great start! And, of course, the biggest hit and most talked about part of the carnival was the igloo built by volunteers in Parrsboro!
We received a fair bit of rain on Friday night, so a few of our Saturday events were cancelled due to safety concerns, but otherwise, all events went ahead as planned. Activities included:
-Five public skates (Parrsboro);
-Lego Drop-in programs at the libraries (Advocate and Parrsboro);
-Winter Play Day (Parrsboro);
-Sledge Hockey Try-it session (Parrsboro);
-Local craft, artisan and bakers sale (Parrsboro);
-Chili and soup lunch (Parrsboro);
-Pancake breakfast (Parrsboro);
-Two Family fun in the snow events (Parrsboro);
-Two sledding parties (Parrsboro and New Salem);
-Two snowshoes events (Parrsboro); and
-A glow-in-the-dark igloo (Parrsboro)

Chilli Willi Winter Carnival
The Springhill Chili Willi Winter Carnival took place from Monday February 18th - Friday February 22nd, 2019. We are pleased to report a very successful community event that was driven by local businesses, not-for-profit organizations, volunteers and the Ross Anderson PharmaChoice Teen Centre.
Activities included:
- Winter Classic Sticks 'N' Pucks
- Family Skate
- Family Coasting Party
- Captain Black Patch McFarlane Treasure Hunt
- 45's and Crib Tournament
- Graffiti on the Ice
- Soup Luncheon

Pugwash Water Supply Update
In our last update we advised that during the commissioning process operators had become concerned with the reliability of the chlorine injection system and we advised that we had provided the supplier a deadline for a final solution. The chlorine skid equipment is ordered and we are awaiting delivery.
Plant operators are now implementing procedures from our process supplier to reduce the amount of air injected into the system. The operators and process supplier are attempting to balance the needs of the treatment process and the aesthetic objective of reducing bubbles in the water.
The next planned update regarding the status of the Pugwash Water System is following the meeting with the contractors and project management group that will take place on Tuesday, March 19th, 2019.

Global Geoparks Evaluation
Exciting news for our region!
On February 21, 2019 the fourth open session of the International Geosciences and
Geoparks Programme took place in Paris.
UNESCO Global Geoparks released the list of 2019 candidates for evaluation and Cliffs of Fundy, is among the 14 aspiring Global Geopark candidates from around the world who have made the list! Cliffs of Fundy is expecting a team of UNESCO evaluators on site this summer.
A Global Geopark is a prestigious designation awarded to areas with internationally significant geology and compelling nature, culture, and history. Geoparks promote the area to potential visitors, and support business opportunities, special events, and education for the local community. They do not involve restrictions on land use.
This is an amazing opportunity to highlight the geology, nature, culture, and history of our Cliffs of Fundy communities.

MIKE JOHNSON - REGIONAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COORDINATOR (REMC)
The REMC has overall responsibility for disaster preparedness for the members of the Cumberland Regional Emergency Measures Organization (currently the Towns of Amherst, Oxford, and the Municipality of Cumberland). The primary functions of this position are disaster response planning, building relationships with other organizations having a disaster response role, and advising and informing elected --officials, staff, and the public with regard to disaster preparedness.

The Recreational Trail Expansion Grant Program
This program provides funding to municipalities, community groups, Mi'kmaq Band Councils and not-for- profit organizations to develop new trails, expand recreational trails, and capital upgrades to existing trails in order to increase opportunities for Nova Scotians to recreate in the outdoors and connect with nature.

Farm Credit Canada - AgriSpirit Fund
Do you have a project that will enhance lives or contribute to sustainability in your rural community? The FCC AgriSpirit Fund may provide between $5,000 to $25,000 to projects that qualify in a city or town with less than 150,000 people.
Types of projects we consider:
- Capital projects - construction or upgrades to a hospital, medical centre, childcare facility, rink, sportsplex or the purchase of fire and rescue equipment
- Sustainability projects - upgrades to heating and cooling systems in a community building, installing new windows in a recreation centre or purchasing capital items for a recycling facility

GoodLife Kids Foundation
GoodLife Kids Foundation is accepting requests for funding from organizations providing an ongoing physical activity program for children and youth with intellectual disabilities and/or autism, ages 4 to 21 years
.
Criteria:
- Organization must be a Canadian registered charity or other qualified donee as identified under the Income Tax Act (Canada)
- Program has a clear outcome related to increasing physical activity for children and youth with intellectual disabilities and/or autism
- Program takes place in Canada, excluding Quebec
- Grants of up to $10,000 will be considered
Deadline: April 1, 2019

Funding will be allocated to projects that will generate maximum impact, creating lasting change for children and youth (up to the age of 21), in the following areas:
- education programming to help children reach their full potential
- programming supporting healthy children
- building safe, kid-friendly communities
- services for children and youth with special needs and their families
- programs that promote the interest of children and youth
- mental health programs for children and youth

Sport Fund Community Grant Program
Through the collaboration between Sport Nova Scotia, Support4Sport, Province of Nova Scotia, Sport Canada and Manulife, Sport Fund looks to increase sustainable quality sport programs in Nova Scotia. Is your club and/or organization working to develop sport by starting a new program or looking for equipment, coaching/ leadership etc., program development to be able to support your new or enhanced initiative?
If you are interested in applying for Sport Fund, please contact your Regional Sport Consultant to discuss your project and arrange for a consultation. A consultation is your best bet to creating a sustainable program and accessing funding!

Ashley Hamel Places 9th Overall
On Thursday, February 21st, 2019 Ashley Hamel, resident of Parrsboro, was celebrated with a pep rally to help celebrate her achievement of being invited to compete at the Canada Games in a sport that she loves to compete in, archery. This pep rally gave the residents in Parrsboro a chance to come and celebrate with Ashley before her big send off on Saturday, February 23rd, 2019.
Ashley had a great run in Red Deer, AB at the 2019 Canada Games and she placed 9th overall. Congratulations Ashley!!

ACE Community Leadership Awards 2019
The Fundy Female Leadership Network (FFLN) is a committee that was formed in 2015 with the purpose of supporting, celebrating, and promoting female leadership within the community of sport and recreation. The mission of this committee is to promote meaningful development opportunities that will empower more females to take leadership roles within sport, recreation, and physical activity.
To celebrate, on Saturday, February 23rd, 2019 we held our ACE Community Leadership Awards at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre in Truro. There were eleven individuals around the Fundy Region that were nominated. To be nominated for these awards nominees has to demonstrate leadership in sport and recreation in the Fundy region. Through their various roles, they have contributed a positive change in programs, policies or practices that have helped build a culture where girls and women are encouraged to participate meaningfully in sport and recreation.
Pam Chenhall (Amherst Minor Basketball Association) - "Pam was instrumental in the re-organization of the Amherst Minor Basketball Association. She continues to be a strong proponent of minor basketball equally for boys and girls alike."
Ashley Hamel (Fundy Shore Archers / ACE Community Leadership Award Winner) - "She is determined to show everyone that archery should not be thought of as a male-dominated sport. In the month of January she held two archery clinics where she introduced 22 females to the world of archery. With this amount of female interest in the sport, Ashley has shown commitment and leadership towards making a contribution towards a positive change to the culture of where girls and women are encouraged and supported to participate."

Nova Scotia Coach Mentorship Program - open for 2019-2020 applicants
The goal of this new initiative is to pair up experienced Nova Scotia community coaches with upcoming, committed coaches who are looking to grow in their roles, to increase the opportunities for coaches to work with those in other sports and see what other contexts look like and to increase the success rates of upcoming coaches.
This is a multisport mentorship program open to community coaches. Mentors are paid for participation in the program and mentees, access the program at no cost which is an amazing resource offered by our province, to our community coaches. Mentorship pairings take place within the six (6) regions of Nova Scotia so mentor and mentees reside in the same regions.

Summer will be here before you know it and Camp Tidnish is looking for dedicated, energetic, and enthusiastic folks to join our staff. This year we are looking for camp counsellors, kitchen and nursing staff. We're also looking to fill the role of Program Coordinator. Start dates are mid-May and the camping season runs until the third week of August.
Camp Tidnish is a program of Easter Seals Nova Scotia and is operated in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Amherst. Our camp is located just outside of Amherst, Nova Scotia. We have been operating overnight summer camps for children, youth and adults with physical and/or intellectual disabilities for over 80 years! Our camping program helps Nova Scotians with disabilities access recreation in a safe, fun and inclusive environment. Our staff are essential in ensuring all our campers have a positive experience that includes quality health care, nutritious meals and exciting activities!
