January Zone 10 Update
Welcome to a brand new show year! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. The 2019 competition year is already off and running with the start of HITS Coachella and the USHJA Gold Star Clinic – West. The show year is just getting started so you have plenty of time to take advantage of this year’s championships and incentives, special classes and sections, and educational programs. Be sure to visit the USHJA website to learn more. The Zone 10 Monthly e-News is also a great place to keep up with USHJA championships and programs as we will feature descriptions, program deadlines, and website links throughout the year. We are looking forward to seeing what our Zone 10 members achieve this year!

Zone 10 native and professional rider Ashlee Bond has big plans for 2019 and they start with a packed show schedule.

“This year there are lots of changes to our schedule. In addition to doing the first three weeks of HITS Coachella, we’ll be heading to the east coast for the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit, and the Nations Cup competition at Deeridge Farms. We’re starting off a lot more aggressive than last year,” Ashlee explained. “After heading back home and finishing the HITS Coachella circuit, we’ll travel to Thunderbird and then to Europe for two months.”

Sport History: Fun facts from the USHJA Wheeler Museum!
Do you know why an “oxer” is called an “oxer”?

The name came from the practice of putting parallel rails on either side of a hedge to keep oxen from damaging natural hedges.

In the early day of foxhunting, riders jumped these hedges and rails as they followed the hounds, and those obstacles became known as oxers.

An authentic example of an oxer is still seen at Hickstead in England. Modern-day oxers can be any kind of jump with parallel rails, but the back element can only have one rail.
