- NENSA's U16 Championships were held in Bethel Maine last weekend ~ see full recap in box below
- Team New England is currently half way through Junior Nationals in Anchorage AK and leading in the Alaska Cup points...! New England currently at 769 points over Alaska with 604 and Midwest with 440. See recaps below for race day one and day two ~ lots of podiums, top 10 All Americans and solid and deep results from Team New England. - WC Masters was held in Norway this past week ~ see box below for a recap on how some of our New England NENSA masters did!
- Mansfield Nordic Club hosted the Club Relay Championships this past weekend in Craftsbury Vermont ~ see box below for recap

Be sure to save the date ~ The SkiRack and Fischer, are bringing
Kikkan Randall to Sleepy Hollow Vermont
next Wednesday March 20th from 4-6pm. There will be an opportunity to ski with Kikkan, followed by and Q&A, and the chance to purchase Kikkan/Fischer buffs to support her charity AKTIV against Cancer. Sleepy Hollow will also be waiving their trail fees and instead giving you to opportunity to make a donation to Kikkan's charity.

Katharine needs your vote!
|
Katharine Ogden was nominated for a very prestigious award and is a semi-finalist, but she needs our votes NOW to help put her in the top spot,
as voting ends tomorrow, March 15th!
The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) has selected 30 semifinalists for the 89th annual James E. Sullivan Award, one of which is Dartmouth sophomore skier Katharine Ogden. This award has been presented annually since 1930 to the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. (FYI - Michael Phelps was a previous winner of this award!)

Please feel free to forward. We really hope she wins. Katharine was part of the women's relay team at 2017 World Juniors who earned bronze, the first podium for the US ever! She is an incredible athlete, and one darn nice person to boot! NENSA is rooting and voting for Katharine!

NENSA's U16 CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
|
Over the weekend Bethel Village Trails hosted the annual U16 Eastern Championships. It was a wonderful weekend of skiing with excellent conditions and mostly sunny skies over the course of three days of racing. U16’s is a championship level event for 14 and 15 year old skiers from New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, as well as Guest Class skiers from outside the region. This year we were lucky enough to host guest teams from the Midwest as well as Great Lakes Division from Michigan.
Friday kicked off with the 5km Individual Freestyle skate race on Gould Academy’s beautiful and hilly Pine Hill Trails. Bethel has seen no shortage of snow this year, and spectators were greeted with shoulder high snow banks as they pulled in to the parking area for the event. The race course was set up perfectly, with multiple places were parents and coaches could see their skiers coming in and out of the podium area. Skiers put in strong performances under bluebird skies, and it was a fantastic opener to the weekend.

Junior Nationals Update:
Race day one, the freestyle individual start
|
Monday March 11th was the first Junior National race day here in Anchorage Alaska. Team New England came out strong, and by the end of the race day, we had 5 podiums in 6 age classes, three silver medals and two bronze medals. We also had 17 All American's which is awarded to athletes who finish in the top 10 at US Junior Nationals. Congrats to all!
- The first New England podium of JN’s was from Will Koch (SMS) who took third🥉 place in the U18 men’s 10k freestyle race. Other NE athletes with top 10 finishes included Griffin Wright in 5th, Josh Valentine in 6th and Brian Bushey in 10th.
- Podium #2 for Team New England was from Trey Jones (GMVS) who got 2nd place 🥈 in the U16 boys 5k freestyle race. Other NE athletes in the top 10 included Jack Lange 5th, Aidan Burt 6th, and Mathias Boudreaux-Golfman 8th.
- Podium #3 for Team New England was captured by Nina Seeman (SMS) with a 2nd place 🥈 in the U18 5k women’s race. Other NE athletes in the top 10 included Charlotte Ogden 4th, Shea Brams 6th, and Anna Lehman 9th.
- Podium #4 for Team New England was in the U20 women’s 5k freestyle race with Sophia Laukli in 3rd place 🥉 in the U.S. Junior Nationals in Alaska. Other NE athletes in the top 10 included Callie Young in 5th.
- Podium #5 for Team New England came from Sofia Scirica (CSU juniors) with a 2nd place finish 🥈 in the U16 girls 5k race. Other NE athletes in the top 10 included Ava Thurston with a 5th place finish.
- And finally, in the U20 men's 10k state race, Will Solow (Colby College) finished in the top 10 with a 5th place finish.

Junior Nationals Update:
Race day two, the classic sprint race
|
Wednesday March 13th was the classic Sprint Day races at Junior Nationals, which included 7 podiums ~ one gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals. Team NE also had 23 All American top 10 finishes today! Congrats to all!
- Team New England has its first National Champion today, double podium, with Aidan Burt (MNC) winning 🥇the U16 boys classic sprint race! Trey Jones (GMVS) was 2nd 🥈! Rounding out the top 10 from Team NE were Elvis McIntosh (Frost Mountain Nordic) in 4th, Samuel Murray (Ford Sayre) in 6th, and Mathias Boudreau-Golfman (SMS) in 9th.
- Podium #2 was a double for Team NE in the U20 men division with Conor Munns (SMS) taking 2nd place 🥈 and Will Solow (Colby College) taking 3rd place 🥉
- Podium #3 was from Charlotte Ogden (SMS) who took 3rd place 🥉 in the U18 women’s division. Other NE athletes in the top 10 included Shea Brams (CSU juniors) in 4th, Anna Lehmann (SMS) 8th, Schuyler Michalak (Dubin XC) 9th and Laura Appleby (CSU juniors) in 10th.
- Podium #4 was another double NE podium, in the U16 girls classic sprint race, that found Quincy Massey-Bierman (Craftsbury Nordic) in 2nd place 🥈 and Ava Thurston (MNC) in 3rd🥉! Rounding out the top 10 from Team NE were Evelyn Walton (CSU juniors) in 6th, Camille Bolduc (Craftsbury Nordic) in 9th.
- Top 10's in the U20's women's sprint finals went to Callie Young (Dartmouth College) for her 4th place overall, and personal best at Junior Nationals, and Sophia Laukli (SMS) in 8th.
- Top 10 in the U18 men's sprint finals included Josh Valentine (GMVS) who finished 4th overall and Will Koch (SMS) who finished 5th overall. Team NE went deep in the top 10 with Keenan Durham (Ford Sayre) finishing 7th, Cal Schrupp (Gunstock Nordic) in 8th, and Griffin Wright (Craftsbury Nordic) in 10th.

For Immediate Release: Fischer Nordic
Once again, the Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld (AUT) were a complete success for
Fischer
: 68% of the skis and 60% of the boots were worn by medallists from the Fischer Race Family. In addition, 75% of all medal winners were successful with the TURNAMIC® binding system. Consequently, Fischer has once again proven to be the most successful brand in Nordic racing. With a total of 88 medals - 32 Gold, 29 Silver, 27 Bronze - this was the most successful World Championships (apart from Oslo in 2011) in the company's history.

NENSA Masters Shine at World Cup Masters in Norway!
|
A number of NENSA Masters traveled to Norway this past week to participate in the Masters World Cup happening March 8th - 17th.
NENSA received word that Trina Hosmer (Stowe Nordic) had triple GOLD podiums in her M9 Women's age group for winning the 10k skate, 5k classic, and 15k classic races! WOW! Bob Gray (Putney Ski Club) got a bronze in the skate 10k race and Dave Johnston (Brattleboro VT) won a silver in the 15k skate, and gold in the 10k skate. Also, Mary Heller Osgood's (Putney Ski Club) USA relay team (age 60-70) got a bronze medal and Trina Hosmer's relay team (age 70-80) also won a bronze.

SafeSport Program
NENSA has always urged ALL New England coaches, parent volunteers, venue volunteers and anyone working with youth to take the SafeSport on-line course and get certified. NENSA has been requiring this of all our staff and volunteer coaches and wax techs at JN's and REG Camps for several years now. So please take time this season to be sure all your club volunteers and coaches are SafeSport certified. Do it today.

MANSFIELD NORDIC CLUB WINS NEW ENGLAND CLUB RELAY CHAMPIONSHIP
|
Fifty-seven 4-person relay teams braved blowing snow and gusty winds to compete in the 3rd annual New England Club Relay Championship at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center on Sunday, March 10th. Any New England nordic ski clubs could enter all male teams, all female teams, mixed teams with at least 2 women, and BKL teams. Each team had the option to enter in one of two categories, including combined age of <200 years or combined ages of >199 years. The goal is for each club to field as many teams as possible by utilizing as many club members as possible in the make-up of their teams. The race field was diverse in ability levels and ranged with everyone from a few former Olympians to many first time racers. To add a bit of flare to the event, some racers devised their own costumes, which included capes as super heroes and tutus as ballerinas.
