Season of Change, Season of Gratitude
Earlier this month , our wonderful President & CEO of six years, Patty Stonesifer, announced her plans to retire in summer of 2019. Patty's reflections echo throughout our halls, classrooms, and markets: " I have never been more excited and more proud of our team and our work." As we enter a season of change, we take a moment to pause and express our sincere gratitude to Patty - for her extraordinary leadership - and to all of our volunteers, donors, partners, friends, and neighbors who continue to stand with us in supporting strong children, strong families, and strong communities.

A formal search has been launched by Diversified Search, a top firm committed to equity and inclusion, to select an exceptional new leader to guide us through our pivotal next chapter. More information can be found here . General inquiries can be made to marthastable@divsearch.com.
Many Thanks for a Fun-filled Community Harvest Dinner!
Our 3rd Annual Community Harvest Dinner was a big success!

We are grateful to all of our neighbors, volunteers, community partners, friends, and MT family who ensured that last Saturday was filled with delicious food, great music and entertainment, dancing, face painting, free shoes, and fun for all.

Big kudos to Chef Flo and all of the volunteers who prepped 3,800 pounds of savory turkey!

Special thanks to our partners at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Kicks 4 the City, Children of Mine Youth Center, and MPD 7D.

We can't wait until next year's celebration!

A Gift that Fosters Pride &
Professional Development
This year, thanks to a generous gift from Apple Society supporters, Barbara and Arthur Bushkin, all MT teachers had the opportunity to attend the National Association for the Education of Young Children's annual conference in Washington, DC. The professional development experience encouraged teachers to collaborate with and learn from early childhood education professionals from around the world, generate new ideas, and bring their learnings back into the classrooms at Martha’s Table.
Inspiring Healthy Eating

In partnership with the University of the District Columbia's Center for Nutrition, Diet, and Health, Martha’s Table hosted a week-long Family Nutrition and Cooking Workshop series at the Commons. Families worked alongside instructors to:
  • Plan and prep nutritious meals
  • Practice safe food handling
  • Learn how to stretch food dollars
  • Increase physical activity

Chef Flo's 5 Star Sweet Potato Pie
Thank you to Chef Flo, who leads our daily food prep and meal efforts with so much heart and a warm smile.
Prep Time: 15 mins | Total: 4 hr | Makes 1 9" pie, 8-9 servings

Ingredients
  • 2 sweet potatoes, 10 oz. each
  • 1 3/4 cups fine graham cracker crumbs (about 18 whole crackers, finely ground)
  • 1/4 cup dark brown sugar
  • 9 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large marshmallows, optional

Steps
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Wrap the sweet potatoes tightly in 2 layers of aluminum foil and roast them in the oven until very soft, about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
  • In a bowl, stir the graham cracker crumbs and brown sugar until well combined. Add the butter and mix until the crumbs are evenly moistened. Press firmly and evenly on the bottom and sides of a 9-inch pie plate to create a crust, being sure there are no cracks. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes until golden. Remove from the oven.
  • Meanwhile, make the filling: Unwrap the potatoes and peel them. Put flesh of potatoes into a bowl and mash well with a fork. Add the eggs, 1/2 cup brown sugar, cream, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla and whip until very smooth with a whisk. Pour the filling into the partially-baked crust. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon brown sugar over top and bake in the center of the oven until set, about 40 minutes. If desired, cut up marshmallows (or use mini-size) and spread over pie and return to oven for 3 minutes.
  • Allow the pie to cool completely before cutting. Serve at room temperature.
Giving for Good: Share warmth and joy this holiday season!
We are accepting donations to supplement holiday gifts for children (e.g. new and unwrapped educational toys, clothes, and books), gift-wrapping supplies for families, winter clothing and accessories for all ages, and healthy food for our neighbors throughout D.C.
