If you want to publish a book with a big New York publishing house (and, increasingly, if you want to publish with a large independent press), you will likely need a literary agent. The relationship between you and the agent can be crucial to your experience with the publication of your work. But what does that relationship look like? In this panel, four authors will discuss working with their agents. Expect a practical discussion focusing on queries, revision, the submission process, communication with agents, post-publication, and planning out your next book(s).

In a book that is sure to be nominated for every major literary award, David Treuer shatters myths and stereotypes as he tells the history of Native Americans since the massacre at Wounded Knee. He does with a mix of genres (memoir, nonfiction, journalism) that O, The Oprah Magazine called "a marvel of research and storytelling."
Treuer will discuss his process of writing the book and be in conversation with WLT Program Director Michael Noll. Books will be for sale, with a signing to follow.
This is Treuer's only scheduled event for Austin so far, so do not miss it!

WLT Presents One Page Salon: Dallas Edition

One of Austin's most beloved reading series - One Page Salon - is teaming up with the Writers' League of Texas and WordSpace's annual Lit Hop event for a road trip to Dallas for an evening of quick readings, slow drinking, and lots of literary shenanigans.
One Page Salon (called "the best literary evening in town" by the Austin American-Statesman) is the brainchild of novelist, screenwriter, and comedian Owen Egerton.
Four outstanding writers will read one page from a work in progress, and there will be time for networking, the on-the-spot One Sentence Salon, and more!

Join us for this free and open event featuring two presentations on the craft of writing and the business of publishing from Writers' League of Texas staff members, plus the opportunity to meet other writers in the area, learn about the WLT's programs and offerings, and more.
WLT Program Director Michael Noll, author of the recently published book The Writer's Field Guide to the Craft of Fiction, will discuss strategies for solving problems of character, scene, plot, and structure.
WLT Executive Director Becka Oliver, who spent more than 16 years working in the book industry, first at major publishing houses and then as a literary agent, before joining the Writers' League, will talk about best practices for querying agents.
There will be plenty of time for questions (bring your burning questions!) for both presenters and attendees will be encouraged to chat with each other before and after the program. We're all about craft, business, and community here at the WLT - this event promises all three, plus light bites and a cash wine bar!

Join a longtime book publicist for a fun and interactive introduction to book publicity and marketing, including a look at what publishers provide for authors, what media contacts expect and need to consider a review or coverage of a book, and what you can do on your own versus what an outside publicist may do for you. You'll take away a timeline for planning promotional outreach for your own projects. The instructor will also look at publicity for some well-known books and deconstruct the process that helped them to find media success.

Crafting Scenes That Go BAM Instead of Blah Blah Blah

This class will help you sharpen your scene writing so it doesn't get bogged down in telling, non-essential description and too much connective tissue. Scenes are where the story happens. If they aren't revealing character or advancing the action, your reader is likely to go to the kitchen and make a cheese sandwich. Participants will learn effective use of dialogue; cutting a scene short to increase intrigue; finding the intent of a scene and writing to it; and using character and setting effectively in scene. We will examine and discuss the scenes in published work as well as those of the class participants.

Memoirist Phillip Lopate asserts that those who write memoir must develop a double-perspective on the past: the self who lived the experiences and the current self who grapples with, contemplates, and re-evaluates those experiences. Writers of this genre need to offer meaning and context to the moments we feel called to bring to the page, and we can hone our ability to do this with practice, play, and perspective-shifting.
