Classroom Happenings
  • Mrs. Troiano and Mrs. Kessler's classes partnered to learn all about the Winter Olympic Games! The students researched and composed reports about Winter Olympic Sports and medal-winning, as well as Olympic athletes both past and present. In Math, students designed Olympic parks and calculated the area and perimeter of each, graphed the medals won by each country, and interpreted the data to answer word problems. The students also decorated t-shirts and competed in Olympic courses, such as Alpine ski runs using their Ozobots, under the direction of technology teacher, Mrs. Pontrella. In addition, they learned about the composition of the Olympic theme song with music teacher, Ms. Williams. During library class with Mrs. Doolen, students listened to a book based specifically upon the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, which was followed by an enthusiastic discussion! Physical Education teacher, Mr. Whitney, engaged the children in rotating stations featuring the sports of figure skating, curling, and a simulated version of the Winter Paralympic games as they played ice hockey on scooters! The students and staff had a wonderful experience and are already looking forward to the 2022  Winter Olympic games in Beijing, China!

  • Grandview's kindergartners got a very special visit this March from a real African penguin right in their own kindergarten atrium! The Penguin Pointer Education Program from Jenkinson's Aquarium provided the students with a more meaningful experience with the non-flying bird. The presentation reinforced a unit of study on penguins the kindergartners had back in January. The program concluded with Vern the penguin waddling amongst the students and teachers making for a fun experience for everyone!

  • On Thursday, April 12th, 3rd grade students in Mrs. Toiano's class hosted a "Books for Bravery" fundraiser in hopes of raising money to help 15-year-old Anthony Borges, who is a victim of the events that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. During the unspeakable tragedy, Anthony was able to save about 20 other students. He has a long road of recovery ahead of him, but he is alive and stable. His family needs help covering the medical bills. Many North Caldwell families have generously donated gently used books, which Mrs. Troiano's class will sell for $1.00 each to all the kids at Grandview School. All of this is in thanks to Alexandra Herman's idea to save a child in need! Many thanks to the support of the North Caldwell families in this effort.
