Volunteers are always asking us for specific ways that they can help us with our kids at SHH.  Right now we are in need of a couple of volunteers who would be willing to come tutor our little Luo SY.  When Luo SY first arrived at the Home, we asked his caregiver how he was doing and she said, "Pretty good except he doesn't listen to anything I say."  Upon further investigation, we learned that he was deaf.  The doctors recommended that if he has surgery to have a cochlear implant placed then this might allow him to be able to hear so we raised money and he was able to have the surgery.  Since his surgery, he has been going to speech therapy to learn what the sounds he is hearing actually mean and to learn how to speak.  Until he can get to the point that he can understand verbal communication, we want to give him a way to communicate through the use of American Sign Language (ASL) and/or Chinese sign language.  He already knows some basic signs but we need some volunteers who would be able to come and spend more time tutoring him in sign language.  We already have some ALS resources that can be used.  If you would be  able to come and spend more time tutoring him in sign language.  We already have some ALS resources that can be used.  If you would be interested in helping us with this need or would like more information, then please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Jessica, at [email protected] .
