Chinese New Year is the most important holiday in China. Most companies and businesses shut down for a couple of weeks around CNY so people can go home and spend time with their family. While everyone else in China is off celebrating with their family, our staff at SHH continues to work hard to care for our children. So during the CNY we celebrated as one big family, trying to incorporate many different traditions for our caregivers and kids to enjoy.
Many Chinese families enjoy sitting around the tv watching performances or parades put on for CNY. Our kids also seemed to really like this tradition. The music and bright colors seemed to captivate their attention...at least for a little while.
CNY is also a time for families to enjoy big dinners together so we had some special dinners for our family at SHH.
For one of the dinners we made homemade dumplings. Fortunately, we have a staff member that comes from an area of China that is famous for their dumplings. She not only knows how to make delicious dumplings but she is also really fast at wrapping them which is a really good thing considering we made 1000 dumplings for that meal.
And of course the CNY would not be complete without red pockets and fireworks!
