A New Year Calls for a
New Bag of Tricks!
January is National Train Your Dog Month. It's the perfect time for dog owners to teach their dogs good canine behavior and something new. After all, a new year calls for a new bag of tricks! Also, December is one of the most popular times of the year when people add a new dog or puppy to their families due to the holidays.
The Association of Professional Dog Trainers (ADPT) created National Train Your Dog Month in 2010 to raise awareness about the importance of socialization and training, and to inform the public that training your dog can be easy and fun. Too many dogs are turned into animal shelters each year for behavior and training issues that could be easily solved with proper socialization and positive, gentle, science-based methods of training.
Every dog and pup can benefit from the right training.
- Training improves the bond between pet and owner, and builds trust and mutual respect to ensure a harmonious relationship.
- Training can eliminate behavioral issues, such as barking, digging, chewing, jumping on guests and territorial marking.
- Proper training enhances safety to make sure your dog heeds your calls to return when off the leash or refrain from eating or touching something dangerous.
- A well-trained dog can experience more with their
owners like going to public events and walks in town, visiting their local pet stores and being more involved with their family.
Three ways you can celebrate National Train Your Dog Month:
1. Teach your canine companion a new trick or two
- Think of a simple and fun trick like rolling over, playing dead, or fetch.
2. Enjoy Furry Fridays -- In January, reserve Friday evenings for your dog. Go for a walk or to a dog museum, or watch a dog movie with buttered popcorn and a special treat for your best pal!
3. Spread the word through social media -- Share your dog training accomplishments and challenges with other dog lovers through pictures and videos on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. Have fun and build a better dog training community.

Did You Know?
- You can teach an older dog new tricks. Some studies show that older dogs are easier to train than puppies because they possess longer attention spans, so don't let your dog's age discourage you from getting started in 2019 on training your furry friend and building positive habits.
- Dogs are about as smart as a two- or three-year-old child. This means they can understand about 150-200 words, including signals and hand movements with the same meaning as words.
- The first modern dog training guide, "Training You to Train Your Dog," was written and published by Blanche Saunders in 1930. It was the first of its kind!

Meet
BAILEY, SIMBA
and
HAM
...
They are as sweet as can be!
Bailey is a sweet and loving six-year-old Tabby cat. Unfortunately, Bailey, along with her brother Simba, were surrendered to ROAR after being in a home together for about six years due to a family member being highly allergic. Bailey is a little shy, but is slowly coming out of her shell every day. She was in a foster home over the holidays and is ready to meet her forever family!
Bailey is spayed, micro-chipped and up-to-date on her vaccinations.
SIMBA
Simba is a six-year-old, sweet and loving Tabby boy who was surrendered with sister Bailey to ROAR.
It took Simba a little while to adjust to shelter life. However, this handsome boy now chooses to jump on laps and curls up for naps. He is also a treat lover and was recently introduced to clicker training with treats as rewards.
This boy will definitely come out of his shell even more once he is back in a home with a loving family!
Simba is neutered, micro-chipped and up-to-date on his vaccinations.
***Please remember to keep your cats indoors, especially during this time of year, as predators are active preparing for the harsh weather ahead.***

HAM
This goofy boy can't wait to meet you! Ham is sweet, four-year-old Pit Bull Terrier Mix who loves to play fetch and run around the yard. He will also be happy just snuggling up and spending some quality time with his human family.
Come down and see for yourself how lovable this boy is!
Ham would do best in a home with experienced dog owners that have a fenced yard and no young children.
He is up-to-date on his vaccinations and is neutered. Ham is also micro-chipped.

Cruz
We care so very much about the dogs and cats while they reside at ROAR. But we also care about them once they leave our shelter. That's what separates us from most other shelters. Our staff does their very best to make sure that each adoption is a good fit for the animal AND the family who is opening their door to a pet.
We not only consider the dog or cat's temperament, but look at your family's experience, housing, ages and many additional factors. We know sometimes our adoption process takes a little longer, and we never offer same day adoptions. But, when we read an email like the one below, it makes it all worth it! Thank you "A" family for adopting Cruz (aka Marvin) and making him a part of your pack, and many thanks to our friends at Blue Buffalo for making Happy Tails like this one possible!

Dear ROAR Staff,
Just sharing a few pictures of Cruz (formerly Marvin). He is very tall and still growing, but has the most laid-back personality and is just so gentle. He has fit in very well around here. He loves being wherever his family is. He is great in the car, was a breeze to crate train, and has fallen in love with our kids especially. He even won the costume contest in our town at the pet parade this year.
Thank you for looking beyond the application that stated we had two young children, and seeing our previous experience with rescues and love of dogs. We are so happy we were able to rescue a dog when it was time to complete our family again. There is truly an emptiness without a dog, even with two kids running around. Thanks for filling that.
